Valley Yarns Bubble Gum Knit Waistcoat

What Is Being Made

The Bubble Gum is a sophisticated knit waistcoat (vest) designed by Susan Baron, crafted from luxurious cashmere yarn. This sleeveless garment features overlapping front bands and is intended as a versatile layering piece suitable for everyday wear. Available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, the sample shown is size S with finished bust measurements of 39 to 69 inches depending on size selection.

Yarn and Materials

This project uses Valley Yarns Brodie, a premium yarn composed of 95% cashmere and 5% extra fine merino. The yarn is worked at 154 yards per 50-gram ball. Yardage requirements range from 6 balls for the smallest size (XS) to 11 balls for the largest sizes (4XL and 5XL). The sample shown is knit in color #223 Lt. Grey. Additional materials include stitch holders or waste yarn and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires three needle sizes to accommodate different stitch patterns and gauges:

  • US 9 (5.5mm) 40-inch circular needle for the body
  • US 8 (5mm) 40-inch circular needle for ribbing sections
  • US 8 (5mm) 16-inch circular needle or double-pointed needles for the armhole band

Techniques Used

The Bubble Gum waistcoat employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an adventurous beginner skill level. The garment is worked flat on circular needles in rows rather than in the round for the main body sections. The construction uses seamedknit-bound finish, providing a clean, refined edge at the neck opening. Armhole shaping is incorporated through strategic bind-offs and decreases to create proper garment fit.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

Two primary stitch patterns are featured in this design:

  • Seeded Rib Pattern: Used for the main body of the waistcoat, this textured pattern is worked to a gauge of 18 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches when gently blocked
  • K1/P1 Rib Pattern: Applied to ribbed sections including the neckline and armhole bands, this classic rib achieves a gauge of 24 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches when gently blocked

The pattern also incorporates standard decreases such as knit 2 together (K2tog) and slip-slip-knit (ssk) for shaping armholes and other fitted areas. Bind-offs are used to create clean edges and define garment sections.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an Adventurous Beginner project, the Bubble Gum waistcoat is accessible to knitters with basic skills while offering enough structure and shaping to provide a satisfying challenge. The straightforward construction, worked flat in manageable sections, makes it an ideal project for developing intermediate techniques.
