Valley Yarns Thecia Baby Cocoon Cardigan
What Is Being Made
The Thecia is an adorable baby cocoon cardigan designed by Susan Baron, perfect for infants from 0–6 months or 6–12 months. This garment combines the comfort of a cocoon with the practicality of a cardigan, featuring optional sleeves or a sleeveless sack style. The cocoon can be customized with solid or contrast-color hearts, making it an ideal handmade gift for special little ones. Finished chest circumference ranges from 21 inches for the smallest size to 23¼ inches for the larger size, with lengths from shoulder measuring 19½ to 22 inches.
Techniques Used
The Thecia employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that add visual interest and construction variety:
- Bottom-up construction: The cocoon body is worked from the hem upward, allowing for easy adjustments and a traditional building method.
- Worked in the round: The piece begins as circular knitting from the hem to the front opening, creating a seamless cocoon base.
- Transition to flat knitting: After the front opening begins, the garment transitions to working back and forth in rows, enabling the button band integration and front shaping.
- Cable work: A heart cable pattern forms the center of the front, creating an eye-catching decorative element.
- Buttonhole construction: Integrated buttonholes are worked into the button bands on either side of the heart cable center, allowing for twelve ¾-inch buttons.
- Drop-shoulder sleeves: Optional sleeves are worked downward from the shoulders, providing flexibility for a sleeved or sleeveless finish.
- Intarsia or duplicate stitch hearts: Contrast-color hearts can be incorporated using intarsia techniques during knitting or added afterward using duplicate stitch, offering customization options.
- Three-needle bind-off: An extra needle is used for finishing seams with this sturdy joining method.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the Thecia is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for baby garments. The gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. Cable stitches are used to create the decorative heart cable pattern that runs down the center front, adding textural interest and visual appeal. The heart motif can be worked using intarsia (color changes during knitting) or duplicate stitch (embroidered after completion), depending on the maker's preference and skill level.
Materials and Yarn
The Thecia is designed to be knit in Valley Yarns Haydenville, a blend of 60% Superwash Merino Wool and 40% Acrylic Microfiber. This fiber composition ensures the finished cocoon is soft against a baby's delicate skin while remaining durable and easy to wash and wear—essential qualities for baby garments. Main color (MC) yardage requirements are 2 skeins (220 yards each) for the 0–6 month size and 3 skeins for the 6–12 month size. If adding contrast-color hearts, 1 additional skein of Valley Yarns Haydenville in the contrast color (such as Red) is needed. Available main color options include Lavender and Gold.
Needles required are US 6 (4 mm) needles, including a 16-inch circular needle and double-pointed needles (dpn) for working in the round and for small circumferences. An extra US 6 needle is needed for the three-needle bind-off finishing technique. Additional materials include a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, twelve ¾-inch buttons for the front closure, and a sewing needle with matching thread for attaching buttons. For makers who prefer not to use buttons, twill tape with snaps can be substituted as an alternative closure method.
Skill Level and Construction Notes
The Thecia is rated as an Intermediate skill level project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The pattern offers flexibility and customization: the cocoon can be made with drop-shoulder sleeves or as a sleeveless sack, and the heart motif can be worked in the same color as the garment or in a contrasting color using either intarsia or duplicate stitch methods.
