Valley Yarns Grayling Cardigan: Advanced Beginner Knit Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Grayling is a gender-neutral children's cardigan designed by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns. This practical, stylish garment features a button-front closure with crew neckline and is specifically engineered to grow with active children. Available in four sizes ranging from newborn to four years old, the cardigan accommodates generous positive ease (2–4 inches) to fit over bulky diapers and allow room for growth. The finished chest measurements range from 18½ inches for the smallest size to 24¼ inches for the largest.

Key Design Features

  • Button-front cardigan with crew neck
  • Long sleeves with raglan shoulder construction
  • A-line shaping in the body to accommodate diaper bulk
  • Textured stitch details on sleeves and lower body
  • Generous positive ease for growing room and layering
  • Gender-neutral styling suitable for any child

Knitting Techniques Used

The Grayling employs a bottom-up, worked-flat construction method with strategic seaming. The cardigan body is knit in one piece from the bottom up, worked back and forth in rows on circular needles. At the underarms, the body is divided so the fronts and back are worked separately back and forth to the shoulders. This approach allows for precise shaping and fit adjustments.

The A-line shaping is strategically placed within the stockinette stitch section of the body rather than the textured lower section, preventing disruption to the visual pattern. Sleeves are knit separately in flat rows and then seamed in place using a tapestry needle, which is characteristic of traditional raglan sleeve construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Grayling combines two primary stitch patterns to create visual interest and texture:

  • Stockinette Stitch: Used for the upper body and portions of the body shaping, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Basketweave Stitch: Applied to the lower body and sleeves, providing textured detail and visual appeal while maintaining durability for active wear

The pattern uses the Long-Tail Cast-On method to begin the project, a classic technique that creates a neat, elastic edge suitable for children's garments. Stitch markers are used throughout to track pattern repeats and shaping points.

Materials and Yarn

The Grayling pattern calls for Valley Yarns Valley Superwash Sport, a practical choice for children's knitwear. This yarn is composed of 100% Extrafine Superwash Merino Wool and is machine washable, making it ideal for garments that require frequent laundering. The yarn is available in 50-gram skeins with 153 yards per skein. Yarn requirements vary by size: 3 skeins for the smallest size (0–6 months), 4 skeins for sizes 6–12 months and 1–2 years, and 5 skeins for the largest size (2–4 years). The pattern shown is knit in Color 16 Blue.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires two needle sizes to create proper gauge and structure:

  • US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles: Available in 16-inch and 24–30-inch lengths, used with the larger needle size for the main body and sleeves in stockinette and basketweave stitches
  • US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles: Used for ribbing and finishing details that require a tighter gauge

Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a tapestry needle for seaming sleeves and finishing, 5–6 half-inch diameter buttons (depending on size) for the front closure, and sewing needle and thread to attach buttons securely.

Gauge and Finished Measurements

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished size. The pattern specifies 26 stitches and 34 rows equals 4 inches in stockinette stitch and basketweave stitch using the larger US 5 needles, measured after blocking. Gauge should be checked on a blocked swatch before beginning the project to ensure the cardigan fits as designed.
