Valley Yarns Creek is an intermediate-level knitted duster cardigan designed by Susan Baron. This garment is a soft, lightweight layering piece ideal for cooler evenings, featuring a flattering A-line silhouette. The duster is available in four size ranges: XS-S, M-L, XL-2X, and 3X-4X, with finished bust measurements ranging from 42½ inches to 65½ inches when laid flat. The garment is designed to be worn with 4–8 inches of positive ease for comfortable, relaxed fit. Length varies by size from 39 to 42¾ inches when worn.
Valley Yarns Creek is knit using Valley Yarns Whately, a sumptuous blend of 68% baby alpaca and 32% organic Pima cotton. This natural fiber combination provides lightweight warmth without excess bulk, making it ideal for a duster-weight garment. Yardage requirements range from 10 balls (approximately 1,640 yards) for the smallest size to 18 balls (approximately 2,952 yards) for the largest size. The pattern is shown in the colorway Fawn.
The pattern requires US size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles in 32–40 inch lengths for the main knitting, and US size 8 (5mm) circular needles in 40 inch length for ribbing or edging work. Additional materials include locking stitch markers to track pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for seaming and finishing.
Gauge is an important consideration for this design because the piece is knit sideways, which affects how the fabric behaves when worn. Flat gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch. When worn: 18 stitches and 26 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch, and 18 stitches and 24 rows equal 4 inches in eyelet pattern. The directional stretch of sideways knitting causes stitches to become wider and longer on the body, which is an intentional design feature that contributes to the garment's drape and fit.
Valley Yarns Creek employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques:
The pattern features a sophisticated combination of stitch techniques:
The sideways construction method used in Valley Yarns Creek offers both aesthetic and practical advantages. By knitting from side to side, the designer achieves directional interest and allows the stripe pattern to flow naturally across the garment. The integration of short-row shaping creates gentle A-line increases that enhance the silhouette without requiring complex decreases or increases worked
