Product Description

Valley Yarns Lagoon is ideal for warmer weather and perfect as a scarf or a wrap knit in Charlemont. The accessory has an allover lace and cable pattern, which makes this ideal for new knitters who want to enhance simple lace and cable knitting skills, yet interesting enough to keep more experienced knitters captivated. The scarf is knit flat in one piece from the bottom up seamlessly with garter stitch edges, and both cast-on and bind-off edges are worked with matching garter stitch borders. Valley Yarns Charlemont is a stunning blend of superwash Merino, Mulberry silk, and polyamide. It is incredibly soft with a lustrous sheen that accentuates the jewel-like colors. Valley Yarns Lagoon Knitted Scarf and Wrap

What is Being Made

The Lagoon is a versatile knitted scarf and shoulder wrap designed by Julie Turjoman. This elegant accessory measures 17 inches wide by 72 inches long when finished, making it wide enough to wear as a generous shoulder wrap or gathered as a traditional scarf. The design is ideal for warmer weather, offering breathability and sophisticated style suitable for transitional seasons.

Craft and Construction Method

This project is created using the knitting craft with a bottom-up, worked flat construction method. The scarf is knitted back and forth in rows in one continuous long piece rather than being assembled from multiple components. This seamless approach eliminates the need for seaming and creates a unified fabric. The worked-flat technique allows knitters to see the pattern development as they progress, making it easier to track stitch repeats and pattern changes.

Techniques and Stitches

The Lagoon incorporates several intermediate knitting techniques that make it suitable for advanced beginners—knitters who have mastered basic skills and are ready to develop proficiency with more complex stitch work.

  • Cable Stitches: The pattern features both right-leaning cables (2/2 RC) and left-leaning cables (2/2 LC), which are created by crossing stitches over each other using a cable needle. These cables add textural interest and visual movement to the design.
  • Lace Stitches: Decorative openwork is created through yarn overs (yo) combined with decreases such as ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together), as well as the centered double decrease sk2p (slip, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over). These techniques create the characteristic holes and delicate appearance of lace knitting.
  • Garter Stitch: The side edges and cast-on and bind-off borders are worked in garter stitch (knitting every row), which prevents the fabric from rolling and provides a clean, finished frame for the lace and cable pattern.

The pattern repeats every 8 rows over a multiple of 13 stitches plus 12 edge stitches, creating a balanced, allover design that flows continuously across the width of the scarf. The combination of cables and lace creates both visual interest and the soft, elegant drape characteristic of this design.

Materials and Tools

The Lagoon is knitted with Valley Yarns Charlemont, a premium blend yarn composed of 60% Fine Superwash Merino, 20% Silk, and 20% Polyamide. Two hanks of 100 grams each (439 yards per hank) are required to complete the project. The yarn color is Rasp Raspberry Rose, a sophisticated hue that complements the lace and cable pattern.

Knitting is worked on US 6 (4.00mm) needles, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional materials include a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when measured in the lace and cable stitch pattern on blocked fabric.

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as advanced beginner, the Lagoon is designed to challenge newer knitters who wish to strengthen their lace and cable knitting abilities while remaining engaging for more experienced knitters. The project balances skill-building opportunities with the satisfaction of creating a beautiful, wearable garment. The long length and repetitive pattern structure allow knitters to develop consistency and confidence with the techniques involved.
