Valley Yarns Great Smoky Mountains Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Great Smoky Mountains is a lightweight cardigan designed for warm weather wear. This simple, essential piece functions as a layering garment perfect for evening strolls or environments with excessive air conditioning. The cardigan is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with the sample shown in Size S. Finished bust measurements range from 35¼ inches to 63¼ inches (including the overlapping front band), with positive ease of 2 to 4 inches for comfortable wearing.

Techniques Used

The Great Smoky Mountains employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its flattering fit and polished construction:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The cardigan is worked from the bottom edge upward, beginning with a long-tail cast-on of 205 to 373 stitches depending on size.
  • Flat Knitting: The garment is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, allowing for seaming at the side seams.
  • One-Piece Body: The sweater is knit in one continuous piece from the cast-on edge to the armholes, then divided for the front and back sections.
  • A-Line Shaping: Strategic increases create an A-line silhouette that flatters the body.
  • Short-Row Shoulders: Short-row shaping at the shoulders enhances fit and creates a more tailored appearance.
  • Seamed Construction: Side seams are sewn together after the main body pieces are completed, providing structure and durability.
  • Separate Sleeve Construction: Sleeves are knit separately and then set into the armholes using a traditional sleeve cap method.
  • Picked-Up Edgings: Stitches are picked up along the front and neck edges to create wide ribbing, a professional finishing technique that frames the cardigan opening.

Stitches Used

The Great Smoky Mountains utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an adventurous beginner skill level:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. This creates the smooth, classic fabric that showcases the yarn's luxurious qualities.
  • Ribbing: Used for the hem at the cast-on edge and for the front band and neck edging. The ribbing pattern alternates knit and purl stitches (k1, p1 or k2, p2 variations) to create vertical columns that provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
  • Long-Tail Cast-On: The pattern specifies the long-tail method for the initial cast-on, a versatile technique that creates a neat, professional edge suitable for garments with ribbing.

Materials and Gauge

The Great Smoky Mountains is designed to be knit in Valley Yarns 2/14 Alpaca Silk, a luxurious blend composed of 80% alpaca and 20% silk. This fiber combination creates an incredibly soft yarn ideal for garments worn close to the skin. The yarn is available in the colorway Grey Teal. Yardage requirements range from one cone (1736 yards) for sizes XS through XL, to two cones (3472 yards) for sizes 2XL through 5XL.

The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32 to 40-inch lengths, or whatever size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge. The target gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows measured over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on blocked fabric. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

Skill Level and Construction Details

Rated as an Adventurous Beginner project, the Great Smoky Mountains is accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex garment construction. The pattern incorporates intermediate techniques such as working in the round on circular needles, managing multiple stitch sections simultaneously, and executing short-row shaping, while remaining manageable for dedicated beginners.

The hem begins with 2 inches of ribbing worked in a k1, p1 pattern, providing a neat, elastic edge. The body is then worked in stockinette stitch with A-line sh
