Valley Yarns Great Smoky Mountains is a lovely yet simple lightweight women’s cardigan knit in 2/14 Alpaca Silk. The sweater is a fabulous extra layer to throw on over a tank or a dress when the air is just a tad too cool. An A-line shaping and short-row shoulders improve the fit. Great Smoky Mountains is knit flat in one piece from the bottom up to the armholes, then divided for the fronts and the back. Sleeves are worked separately and set into the armholes.

Finished bust measurements range from 35¼ inches to 63¼ inches (including the overlapping front band), with positive ease of 2 to 4 inches for comfortable wearing.

The Great Smoky Mountains is designed to be knit in Valley Yarns 2/14 Alpaca Silk, a luxurious blend composed of 80% alpaca and 20% silk. This fiber combination creates an incredibly soft yarn ideal for garments worn close to the skin. The yarn is available in the colorway Grey Teal. Yardage requirements range from one cone (1736 yards) for sizes XS through XL, to two cones (3472 yards) for sizes 2XL through 5XL.
The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32 to 40-inch lengths, or whatever size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge. The target gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows measured over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on blocked fabric. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
Rated as an Adventurous Beginner project, the Great Smoky Mountains is accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex garment construction. The pattern incorporates intermediate techniques such as working in the round on circular needles, managing multiple stitch sections simultaneously, and executing short-row shaping, while remaining manageable for dedicated beginners.
