Valley Yarns Bayuda Cable Pullover Sweater
What is Being Made
The Bayuda is a gender-neutral child's cable pullover sweater designed by Susan Baron. This classic cable knit sweater is available in five sizes ranging from 1-2 years through 8-10 years, with finished chest measurements from 23 inches to 30¼ inches. The sweater features a bold cable panel running up the center front and coordinating smaller cables on the sleeves, making it both visually striking and timeless in design. The split collar construction allows for easy dressing and removal over a child's head, while the garment is designed with 2–4 inches of positive ease to accommodate a growing child.
Techniques Used
The Bayuda employs several key knitting techniques that make it suitable for adventurous beginners progressing toward intermediate skill levels. The sweater is worked flat in separate pieces, meaning the back, front, and sleeves are knitted individually on straight or circular needles rather than in the round. This flat construction is then seamed together using a tapestry needle, allowing for precise shaping and control. The sleeves are worked separately and set in, a traditional tailoring technique that creates a fitted armhole and professional finish. The pattern incorporates armhole shaping with bind-offs and decreases to create proper sleeve cap ease and garment structure. The Long-Tail Cast-on method is used to begin the ribbed edge, providing a flexible and attractive foundation for the garment.
Stitches Used
The Bayuda pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with decorative cable work. Stockinette stitch forms the main fabric body, created by alternating knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic knit appearance. Knit-purl ribbing (K1/P1) is worked at the cuffs, collar, and hem edges, providing elasticity and a finished look that hugs the body. Cable stitches are the signature design element, with a prominent 14-stitch body cable panel measuring 1½ inches wide running vertically up the center front, complemented by smaller coordinating cables on the sleeves. Cable work involves crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture. Decreases including ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) are used for armhole shaping, while bind-offs secure stitches and finish edges.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Bayuda is designed to be knit in Valley Yarns Valley Superwash, a premium yarn composed of 100% Extra Fine Merino wool. This yarn comes in 50-gram balls with 97 yards per ball, and the pattern requires 4 to 7 balls depending on the child's size (4 balls for sizes 1-2 years and 2-4 years, 5 balls for size 4-6 years, 6 balls for size 6-8 years, and 7 balls for size 8-10 years). The sample shown in the pattern was knit in Color 127 Burgundy. The Superwash treatment makes this merino wool machine-washable and easy-care, a practical feature for children's garments that appeals to parents and caregivers managing frequent laundering.
The pattern calls for two sizes of US circular needles measuring 24 inches long: a US size 7 (4.5 mm) needle for the main fabric and a US size 6 (4.0 mm) needle for ribbed edges. Circular needles are used here for their versatility in working flat pieces, as they accommodate the larger stitch counts without strain. The gauge is established at 18 stitches and 26 rows equaling 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles after blocking, with the body cable panel measuring exactly 1½ inches wide when blocked. Additional materials include a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, a tapestry needle for seaming pieces together, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches during construction.
