Product Description

Valley Yarns Chalbi is a stunning gender-neutral hat that is a quick knit and fun for your baby or toddler to wear. The caps are knit in Valley Superwash Bulky, and the kids can choose a lovely rabbit or a sly fox as there are two options for different lengths for the ears. Chalbi is knit in the round seamlessly from the ribbed brim to the crown. The ears are worked from stitches picked up at the top of the crown. Valley Yarns Valley Superwash Bulky combines extra fine Merino softness, machine-washable ease, and incredible warmth into a yarn that you won’t want to live without in your stash! Valley Yarns Chalbi Knit Beanie

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Chalbi is a gender-neutral knit beanie designed for babies and toddlers, featuring animal-inspired ears that can be customized as either fox or rabbit ears. This quick-to-knit hat combines a ribbed brim with stockinette stitch body and decorative ears, making it both functional and playful. The finished hat fits head circumferences of 16 inches (Size S), 18¼ inches (Size M), or 20½ inches (Size L).

Techniques Used

The Chalbi is worked seamlessly in the round, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The hat is constructed in one piece from the ribbed brim through the crown, with strategic decrease shaping that forms the crown of the hat. The ears are worked separately by picking up stitches from the top of the crown, allowing for customization and a dimensional finished look. The pattern includes instructions for both fox and rabbit ear variations, giving knitters creative flexibility.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbed Brim: Alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 rib) create an elastic edge that hugs the head comfortably
  • Body: Stockinette stitch (knitting every round) forms the main fabric, providing a smooth, classic appearance
  • Crown Shaping: Decrease stitches are used to taper the top of the hat to a finished point
  • Ears: Worked in stockinette stitch on smaller needles to create a denser fabric that helps the ears maintain their shape and stand upright

Materials and Tools

The Chalbi requires Valley Yarns Valley Superwash Bulky, a yarn composed of 100% Extra Fine Superwash Merino Wool. Each color requires one 100-gram ball, which yields 109 yards. The pattern calls for two colors: Color A (Rust) and Color B (Tan), allowing knitters to create the fox or rabbit variation by choosing which color forms the main hat body and which forms the ears. Needles include US 10 (8.0 mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches and double-pointed needles for the main hat construction, with US 9 (7.5 mm) circular and double-pointed needles for the ears. Additional materials include stitch markers to track the beginning of each round and a large tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Skill Level and Gauge

Rated as Advanced Beginner, the Chalbi is accessible to both new and experienced knitters. The simple stitch patterns—primarily ribbing and stockinette—make it an ideal project for those building foundational skills, while the seamless in-the-round construction and color work provide gentle challenges. The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles when blocked, with a secondary gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches on the smaller needles for the ears.

Design Details

Designed by Julie Turjoman, the Chalbi combines practicality with charm. The bulky weight yarn ensures quick knitting—the hat works up rapidly, making it an ideal project for gift-giving or stash-busting. The superwash merino wool provides softness and durability while remaining easy to care for, an important feature for baby and toddler garments. The two-color construction and animal ear options allow knitters to personalize their finished hat, whether creating a warm fox beanie or a sweet rabbit version.
