The Heuchera is a hip-length poncho designed by Julie Turjoman, featuring a generous turtleneck and simple square construction. The poncho covers the arms to the elbows and is available in five sizes ranging from XS to XL, with finished widths from 39 inches to 61½ inches. The design is intended to fit bust sizes 32–60 inches with 4–8 inches of positive ease, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various body types.
This advanced beginner knitting project employs multiple construction techniques to create its finished structure. The poncho is worked flat on circular needles, with the front and back panels created separately before being seamed together along the shoulders. The project follows a bottom-up construction method, beginning with ribbed hems at the lower edges. Strategic decrease stitches are incorporated into the first row of both front and back pieces to achieve straight side hems, accounting for gauge differences between the ribbed sections and textured body. After the shoulder seams are completed, stitches are picked up along the center top opening and worked in the round to create the foldover turtleneck. The second half of the turtleneck is worked on larger needles to facilitate comfortable folding and drape.
The Heuchera incorporates two primary stitch patterns that work together to define the garment's structure and visual interest. A Texture stitch forms the main body of the poncho, creating plush textured surfaces across the front and back panels. This textured pattern is complemented by Rib stitch used for the hemlines and the foldover turtleneck. The combination of these stitches provides both crisp stitch definition and the flexibility needed for the garment's drape and structure.
The Heuchera is designed to be knitted with Valley Yarns Amherst, a 100% Merino Wool yarn available in 50-gram balls with 109 yards per ball. The sample shown uses the Driftwood colorway. Yarn requirements vary by size: XS requires 13 balls, S requires 15 balls, M requires 17 balls, L requires 19 balls, and XL requires 22 balls. The project calls for US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles in 24–32 inch lengths for the main texture stitch work, and US 6 (4.0mm) circular needles in both 24–32 inch and 16 inch lengths for the ribbed sections. Gauge is critical to this project: 18 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in Texture stitch on the larger needle size when blocked, and 20 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in Rib stitch on the smaller needle size when blocked. Additional materials include stitch markers, stitch holders or waste yarn, and a tapestry needle for seaming and finishing.
The Heuchera is classified as an Adventurous Beginner level project, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience who are ready to tackle more complex construction methods. The poncho's simple square construction is elevated through the use of textured stitches that create visual interest and dimension. The generous turtleneck design is engineered to go on easily, while ribbed hems further define the poncho's shape and provide structure. The finished length ranges from 20 inches at the shoulders in size XS to 24 inches in size XL, with all sizes falling to the low hip. The design is described as an ideal project for extended leisure time, such as long car trips or relaxing while watching television, as the repetitive stitch patterns allow for meditative, portable knitting.
