Product Description
Valley Yarns Oleander is a soft and cozy pullover with an engaging construction and thoughtful details. Perfect for wearing to the office or weekend outings, Oleander has an A-line silhouette, dropped shoulders, and a deep v-neck that will easily layer or stand on its own. Valley Superwash ensures that your finished sweater will be warm and comfortable as well as easy care with its smooth and soft machine-washable Merino wool. This stylish pullover is knit flat in one piece from the bottom up to the underarms, where the back and front are completed separately and joined at the shoulders with a three-needle bind-off. Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armhole and worked in the round to the wrist. Double moss stitch trims this sweater beautifully at the hem and cuffs, and repeats again around the neckline and along the center front after stitches are picked up along the edge. A clever variation on the three-needle bind-off gives a clean, visible finish and a nice vertical focal point. Stitch pattern is written out only.

Valley Yarns Oleander Pullover Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Oleander is a comfortable and stylish pullover sweater designed by Susan Baron. This garment is crafted as a versatile piece suitable for casual everyday wear, pairing effortlessly with jeans. The sweater features a flattering A-line silhouette with short-row shoulder shaping for enhanced fit, and is available in multiple sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished bust measurements from 33¾ inches to 65¾ inches.
Techniques Used
This sweater employs several intermediate knitting techniques that elevate it beyond basic construction. The lower body is worked flat in one piece with A-line shaping, creating a tapered waist and wider hip area before dividing at the armholes for the front and back sections. Short-row shoulder shaping is incorporated to enhance the overall fit and drape of the garment. The sleeves feature a modified drop-shoulder construction, with stitches picked up around the armhole openings and worked downward to the cuffs. The front band is created by picking up stitches along the front edges and neckline, then worked in double moss stitch before being seamed at the center front using a visible modified three-needle bind-off. This construction method creates a distinctive design detail while maintaining structural integrity.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Double moss stitch: Used for the wide front band, adding textural interest and visual contrast to the neckline and front closure area
- Long-Tail cast-on: The specified method for beginning the lower body stitches
- Three-needle bind-off: A modified visible version used to seam the front band at the center front, creating a decorative seam detail
Materials and Tools
The Oleander is worked in Valley Yarns Valley Superwash, a yarn composed of 100% Extrafine Merino wool. This fiber choice provides softness and comfort while offering practical easy-care properties, making the finished sweater suitable for regular wear and machine washing. Yarn requirements range from 10 balls for the smallest size (XS) to 24 balls for the largest size (5XL), with each ball containing 50 grams and 97 yards of yarn.
Needles required include US size 8 (5.0 mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32–40 inch lengths, plus double-pointed needles of the same size for working in the round on the sleeves. US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in 40-inch length and matching double-pointed needles are used for the hem, front band, and cuffs. Additional materials include stitch markers (with 2 locking stitch markers specifically noted), a stitch holder, and a tapestry needle for seaming and finishing.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needle size after blocking. The sweater is designed with 4–6 inches of positive ease, meaning the finished bust measurement will be 4–6 inches larger than the wearer's actual bust measurement for a comfortable, relaxed fit. This ease allowance is appropriate for a casual pullover style intended for everyday wear.
Skill Level
The Oleander is rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, indicating that while the fundamental techniques are accessible to knitters with some experience, the construction methods—particularly the short-row shaping, picking up stitches, and modified seaming techniques—require intermediate-level skills and attention to detail.
