Product Description

For a basic pullover with just enough texture to make it interesting to knit and to wear, Valley Yarns Stewartia is just the thing! A classic crewneck, set-in sleeve sweater with ribbed trims gets a kick of texture on the yoke and sleeve tops with this design. This pullover is knit in the round from hem to underarms where the front and back are divided and knit flat to the shoulders where they join with a three-needle bind-off. Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armhole and include short-row sleeve caps knit back and forth in the same Swedish Block pattern as the yoke before working in stockinette stitch in the round to the cuffs. For a cozy everyday sweater with wide appeal, Stewartia is a fantastic choice. Valley Yarns Haydenville is a machine-washable blend of superwash Merino wool and acrylic microfiber that has a smooth, soft feel, lovely sheen, and crisp stitch definition that makes patterns pop! Texture pattern is both charted and written out.

Valley Yarns Stewartia Crewneck Pullover

Project Overview

The Stewartia is a classic crewneck pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman for knitters of all skill levels. This pattern is ideal for knitters seeking a straightforward construction project with minimal seaming. The sweater features a strategic placement of textured stitch work limited to the chest and upper sleeves, making it an excellent choice for TV knitting and projects suitable for travel. The design falls to the mid-hip and is constructed to fit with 4–6 inches of positive ease, offering a comfortable, relaxed silhouette.

Construction Techniques

The Stewartia employs a combination of knitting methods to create a well-fitted garment. The body is worked in the round from the ribbed hem up to the armholes, ensuring seamless construction in this section. At the armholes, the piece is divided, and the front and back upper body are then worked flat in rows for the remainder of the sweater. This hybrid approach balances the speed of circular knitting with the shaping control offered by flat knitting.

The shoulders incorporate short-row shaping to enhance the fit and create a more tailored shoulder line. The sleeves are also constructed using short-row shaping at the cap to achieve a proper armhole depth and sleeve pitch. Once the shaped sleeve cap is complete, the knitter transitions to stockinette stitch for the remainder of the sleeve length down to the ribbed cuffs.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Stewartia showcases two primary stitch patterns. The body ribbing and sleeve cuffs are worked in ribbed stitching for elasticity and a finished appearance. The main body of the sweater is constructed in stockinette stitch, a fundamental knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic texture.

The signature design element is the Swedish Block stitch, which appears on the front and back upper body and the upper portions of the sleeves. This textured stitch pattern adds visual interest and dimension to the chest and arm areas while remaining accessible to adventurous beginner-level knitters. The Swedish Block stitch maintains the same gauge as stockinette stitch (20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches when blocked), ensuring seamless transitions between pattern sections.

Yarn and Materials

The Stewartia is designed to be knitted with Valley Yarns Haydenville, a durable and practical yarn blend composed of 60% Superwash Merino and 40% Acrylic Microfiber. This fiber composition provides easy-care properties, making the finished sweater suitable for frequent wear and washing. Haydenville is available in 100-gram skeins with 220 yards per skein.

Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 6 skeins for the smallest size (XS) to 13 skeins for the largest size (5XL). The pattern shown is knitted in Color 08 – Navy, a versatile neutral shade.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern requires two needle sizes to achieve proper fabric density. US size 6 (4.0 mm) needles are used for the ribbed sections at the hem and cuffs. US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles are used for the main body and sleeves in stockinette and Swedish Block stitches. Both needle sizes should be available in 16-inch circular format and 32–40 inch circular format, with double-pointed needles also recommended for small circumference sections.

The working gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked using the larger needle size. The same gauge applies to the Swedish Block stitch pattern, allowing for consistent fabric drape and fit throughout the sweater.

Sizing and Finished Measurements

The Stewartia is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL. Finished chest measurements span from 36 inches (XS) to 68 inches (5XL), accommodating a wide range of body types. The sweater is designed to fit with positive ease of 4–6 inches, creating a comfortable, non-fitted silhouette that skims the body without clinging. The length reaches the mid-hip, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various styling options.

Skill Level and Suitability

Designated as an Adventurous Beginner project, the Stewartia is accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire. The pattern incorporates beginner-friendly elements such as straightforward
