Product Description

Valley Yarns Cosmic Crisp has a simple silhouette that gets a big style boost from multidirectional narrow stripes. Casual and comfortable, this pullover has a boat neckline, dropped shoulders, and long sleeves. Valley Superwash DK ensures that your finished sweater will be cozy warm with a smooth, soft feel and easy-care machine-washability. Your project begins with the body panels, working flat from the bottom up before picking up stitches along one side to work the vertical stripe section. Contrasting color ribbed trims frame each piece, picked up and worked before the front and back are seamed at the shoulders and sides. Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armhole and worked in the round to the wrist. With a wide range of mix and match colors to choose from in Valley Superwash DK, you can create a custom go-to sweater with Cosmic Crisp!

Valley Yarns Cosmic Crisp Striped Pullover Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Cosmic Crisp is a pullover sweater designed by Susan Baron, featuring an eye-catching striped pattern that combines both horizontal and vertical stripe orientations. This advanced beginner knitting project creates a stylish, comfortable garment available in sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 35½" to 63½". The sweater is designed to be worn with 5½" to 7½" of positive ease for a relaxed, comfortable fit.

Techniques Used

This sweater employs a sophisticated bottom-up construction method with a seamed, worked-flat approach. The design showcases creative stripe work through a unique multi-directional technique:

  • Horizontal striping: The front and back panels begin with horizontal stripes worked from the bottom up
  • Vertical striping: Additional stitches are picked up along one side of each horizontal striped panel and worked with stripes perpendicular to the original direction, creating visual interest and dimension
  • Seaming: Once all pieces are completed, shoulders and sides are seamed together for a finished construction
  • Drop-shoulder sleeves: After seaming, stitches are picked up around the armhole and worked downward to create the sleeve caps
  • Ribbed edgings: A solid-colored ribbed hem is worked along the bottom, and a ribbed boat neck is added at the top for structure and comfort

Stitches Used

The Cosmic Crisp primarily features stockinette stitch as the main fabric stitch, providing a smooth, classic knit surface that allows the stripe pattern to shine. Ribbing is used for functional edgings including the hem, cuffs, and boat neckline, which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.

Materials and Yarn

This project uses Valley Yarns Superwash DK, a 100% superwash wool yarn that offers exceptional softness and ease of care. The yarn is available in two colors for this design: Color A in Blue Mist and Color B in Sand. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 9 balls total for the smallest size (XS) to 20 balls for the largest size (4XL).

Needles required include size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in both 16" and 32"–40" lengths, plus double-pointed needles in the same size for working the sleeves and neckline. A size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle in 24" length and matching double-pointed needles are used for the ribbed neck edging and cuffs. The pattern specifies achieving a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows in stockinette stitch over 4" when worked on the larger needles and blocked.

Additional materials needed include 4 removable stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches temporarily, and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

Design Features

What makes the Cosmic Crisp distinctive is its approach to stripe work. Rather than simple horizontal or vertical stripes alone, the pattern combines both directions to create a sophisticated geometric effect. The designer notes that stripes don't have to be boring, and this sweater proves that point through its creative use of directional color changes. The superwash wool construction ensures the finished garment is not only beautiful but also practical and easy to maintain, making it an ideal project for knitters who want to create a wearable, comfortable piece they'll reach for repeatedly.
