Product Description

Inspired by Indian silk sarees and the masterful weavers who make them, the colorful Valley Yarns Tanti Iridescent Scarf draft produces a lovely finished accessory with a gorgeous sheen woven in Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel. Silky smooth and with a fluid drape and luminous sheen, 8/2 Tencel creates finished pieces that have a luxurious feel and iridescence. Woven with a 12 or 12½ dent heddle, this draft doubles the fine threads of the 8/2 Tencel so it’s easily weavable with a single rigid heddle. If you’ve ever wanted to try fine threads on your rigid heddle loom, this is a great place to start! Woven in plain weave, the Tanti Iridescent Scarf lets the qualities of the yarn shine through, accented by stripes in both the warp and weft.

Valley Yarns Tanti Iridescent Scarf

Project Overview

The Tanti Iridescent Scarf is a handwoven scarf designed by Shilpa Nagarkar that captures the luminous quality of traditional Indian silk sarees through strategic color placement and weaving technique. This downloadable weaving draft creates a finished scarf measuring 14.5" wide by 70.5" long, featuring an iridescent effect achieved through alternating warp and weft colors in a plain weave structure.

Weaving Technique and Structure

This scarf employs plain weave, the most fundamental weaving structure, where weft yarns pass alternately over and under warp yarns to create a balanced, stable fabric. The iridescent quality emerges not from complex weaving techniques but from the careful orchestration of color: different hues in the warp and weft create subtle shifts in appearance as light reflects across the finished textile. This approach pays homage to the master weavers of Indian silk sarees who have perfected iridescence through generations of textile craftsmanship.

Equipment Requirements

Weavers will need a rigid heddle loom at least 18 inches wide to accommodate this project. The loom must be dressed with either a 12.5-dent or 12-dent heddle. The pattern calls for 3 shuttles to manage the multiple weft colors efficiently during the weaving process.

Warp Specifications

The warp consists of 192 doubled ends, each measuring 94 inches in length, for a total warp length of 94 inches. Weavers will use Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel (100% Lyocell fiber, 3,360 yards per pound), a smooth, lustrous yarn that contributes to the scarf's sheen and drape. The warp color order alternates between two colors:

  • Burnt Orange 752: The primary warp color, appearing in larger color blocks
  • Fuchsia 251: The secondary warp color, creating color contrast and visual interest

The warp is set at 25 epi (ends per inch) when using the 12.5-dent heddle, achieved by threading 2 doubled ends per dent. For weavers using a 12-dent heddle, the sett adjusts to 24 epi. The width in the reed measures 15.36" (or 16" with a 12-dent heddle).

Weft Specifications

The weft also uses Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel in three coordinating colors, creating the iridescent color shifts as they interact with the warp colors:

  • Fuchsia 151 yards
  • Red Purple 151 yards
  • Burnt Orange 140 yards

The weft is set at 24 ppi (picks per inch) when using the 12.5-dent heddle, with 12 doubled picks per inch. Weavers using a 12-dent heddle will weave at 12 ppi.

Materials and Yarn Properties

Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel is a premium weaving yarn made from 100% Lyocell, a regenerated cellulose fiber known for its lustrous appearance, smooth texture, and excellent drape. The yarn's fineness (8/2 weight) and high yardage per pound (3,360 yds/lb) make it ideal for creating delicate, fluid scarves. Tencel's natural sheen enhances the iridescent effect that is central to this design's aesthetic appeal.

Warping and Loom Setup

The pattern uses the direct warping method, where weavers wind the warp directly onto the loom following the specified color order. For ease of threading, weavers pull a loop through each hole and slot as they warp, since all warp ends are doubled. After tying the warp to the front apron rod, weavers spread the warp with a few picks of scrap yarn to ensure even tension and proper spacing before beginning the actual weaving.
