Valley Yarns Tala Square Shawl

What is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Tala Square Shawl is a knitted square shawl designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This intermediate-level project creates a geometric square garment through a worked-in-the-round construction method, making it an elegant accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Tala Square Shawl is constructed using seamless, in-the-round knitting, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming by working continuously in circular rounds from the center outward. This approach creates a symmetrical, geometric square shape with even stitch distribution throughout the piece.

The shawl features lace knitting as a primary design element. Lace patterns in knitting are created through strategic yarn overs and decreases that form decorative holes and openwork sections, adding visual interest and creating a lighter, more delicate fabric. The design progresses through distinct sections: a beginning section that establishes the foundational pattern repeats, followed by a main body section that expands the lace motifs as the shawl grows outward.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The Tala Square Shawl employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the basic stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative holes and increases stitches, essential for lace patterning
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease used for balanced shaping
  • Slip one, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over (sl1-k2tog-psso) – a centered double decrease that creates more dramatic lace effects

These stitches are combined in repeating pattern sequences across 36 rounds in the documented sections. The beginning section (Rounds 1-24) establishes the lace motifs with increasing complexity, while the main body section (Rounds 26 onward) continues and elaborates these patterns as the shawl expands from the center point.

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for double pointed needles to accommodate the in-the-round construction, beginning with a small cast-on of 8 stitches divided evenly among the needles. The pattern is provided in downloadable PDF format, allowing crafters to reference instructions digitally or print them for reference while working. Specific yarn weight and needle size recommendations would be detailed in the complete pattern documentation.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace patterns and in-the-round construction. The combination of yarn overs, multiple decrease types, and pattern repeats requires attention to stitch counts and pattern reading, making it an engaging project for developing knitters.
