Valley Yarns Eventide Tea Cozy

What is Being Made

The Eventide Tea Cozy is a knitted tea cozy designed to fit a standard teapot, measuring approximately 16 inches around and 6.5 inches tall. This project creates a functional and decorative cover that keeps tea warm while adding elegant style to any kitchen or dining table. The cozy is constructed from two separate knitted pieces that are seamed together with strategic openings to accommodate a teapot's spout, handle, and lid handle.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs seamed construction and flat knitting techniques. The two pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, then carefully sewn together during finishing. The seaming process is intentionally strategic, with specific measurements for each opening: the bottom 2.5 inches and top 2 inches of one side are seamed with a 2-inch opening left for the spout, while the opposite side has the bottom 1.5 inches and top 1 inch seamed with a 4-inch opening for the handle. This construction method allows for precise shaping and openings tailored to functional teapot dimensions.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Eventide Tea Cozy features a sophisticated repeating stitch pattern that combines several fundamental knitting techniques. The pattern incorporates knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases that create a tapered, fitted silhouette. The design also uses knit front and back (kfb) increases to add subtle shaping and texture. A distinctive beaded detail is incorporated using a specialized technique where beads are placed on a crochet hook and slipped onto stitches before knitting, creating an elegant embellished row. The pattern alternates between stockinette sections (knit and purl rows) and garter stitch (all knit rows) to create visual interest and structural stability. The cozy begins with a 46-stitch cast-on and progresses through multiple pattern repeats before a systematic decreasing section that reduces the stitches from 38 to 30 to 22 to 14 stitches, creating a tapered top opening.

Materials and Tools

This project requires one skein of Valley Yarns Franklin Hand Dyed yarn in the Midnight colorway. The yarn is a premium blend of 85% wool and 15% nylon, providing durability and elasticity, with 450 yards of yardage per 4-ounce skein. The yarn is held doubled throughout the entire project, meaning both the outside and inside strands of a center-pull ball are worked simultaneously to create a thicker, more insulating fabric. Knitting is worked on US size 5 needles (or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge), while finishing details require a US size 8 steel crochet hook (1.4 mm) for the beading technique. One tube of size 6 seed beads provides the decorative embellishment. The project achieves a gauge of 23 stitches and 37 rows over 4 inches when working the stitch pattern with yarn held doubled.

Design Details

The Eventide Tea Cozy was designed by Kirsten Hipsky and features a refined aesthetic combining functionality with decorative elements. The pattern repeats create a rhythmic visual texture across the body of the cozy, while the beaded row adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. The decreasing section at the top creates a gentle taper that helps the cozy fit snugly around a teapot's lid opening. The strategic placement of seam openings ensures the cozy functions properly while maintaining structural integrity and visual continuity around the piece.
