Product Description
Our owner, Kathy Elkins, had asked me to work out the math for a simple cowl using her favorite cross-hatch pattern and I knew the silky soft Valley Yarns Charlemont would be the perfect yarn to pair with this stitch! One skein is enough yardage to make the cowl in both lengths.

Valley Yarns Math for Kathy Crochet Cowl
Project Overview
Math for Kathy is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl designed by Sara Delaney for Valley Yarns. This pattern showcases a striking cross-hatch stitch pattern that creates visual texture and interest. The design was developed to work out the mathematical foundation for a simple cowl using a favorite stitch technique, and the pattern is perfectly suited to highlight the characteristics of Valley Yarns Charlemont yarn. One skein provides enough yardage to complete the cowl in either a standard or extended length option.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a seamless cowl—a tubular neckwear accessory that pulls over the head. The finished cowl measures either 20 inches around for the shorter version or 50 inches around for the longer version, offering versatility for different styling preferences and wearing occasions. The cowl can be worn as a simple neck warmer or styled as a longer wrap depending on which length option is chosen.
Techniques Used
The cowl is constructed using seamless crochet techniques, worked in the round to create a continuous tubular fabric without seams. The pattern employs a worked flat approach within each round, where the crocheter turns the work and works in the opposite direction on alternating rounds. This bidirectional working method creates the distinctive cross-hatch visual effect while maintaining structural integrity. The pattern uses slip stitches to join rounds and establish a clean, finished appearance.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for beginners:
- Chain stitch (ch)—used to establish the foundation and create the open spaces within the cross-hatch pattern
- Double crochet (dc)—the primary stitch that forms the solid portions of the pattern and provides structure
- Single crochet (sc)—used to create the connecting points between pattern groups
- Slip stitch (sl st)—used to join rounds seamlessly and complete the tubular construction
The stitch pattern repeats in groups, with the crocheter skipping stitches to create the open cross-hatch effect. The pattern is worked over 168 stitches for the shorter cowl or 420 stitches for the longer version, with the sample shown completed in 18 rounds.
Materials
The pattern calls for one skein of Valley Yarns Charlemont Kettle Dyed yarn, which contains 60% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Mulberry Silk, and 20% Polyamide. This yarn provides 439 yards per 100 grams, offering ample yardage for either length option. The sample is worked in the color Teal Blue. A US size D/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook is used to work the pattern at a gauge of one group of stitches and three rows equaling one inch in the pattern stitch. The fiber blend creates a fabric with the warmth and elasticity of merino wool enhanced by the lustrous sheen and drape of mulberry silk, while the polyamide adds durability and shape retention.
