Garment Overview
The Intemporelle Pullover is a timeless, long, flowing pullover designed by Marcy Vandale for Valley Yarns' Guest Designer Series. This advanced beginner knitting project features a sophisticated construction method that creates a garment transcending seasonal wear. The pullover is knit in one piece from the bottom up, combining seamless construction with strategic yarn weight variations to achieve both structure and drape.
Construction Technique
This sweater employs a bottom-up, seamless, worked-in-the-round construction method. The body and cowl are knit with yarn held doubled, while the sleeves use a single strand of yarn. This intentional variation in yarn weight allows the piece to achieve different fabric characteristics in different sections—the doubled yarn creates a more substantial, structured body and cowl, while the single-strand sleeves offer lighter, more fluid movement. The entire garment is worked circularly, eliminating the need for seaming and creating clean, professional finishing.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The Intemporelle Pullover primarily uses stockinette stitch as the foundation fabric. The pattern incorporates several specialized decreasing and increasing techniques common to advanced knitting:
- k2tog (knit 2 together) - a right-leaning decrease
- ssk (slip, slip, knit) - a left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
- sl2tog-k1-p2sso (slip 2 stitches as if to knit 2 together, knit 1, pass the 2 slipped stitches over) - a centered double decrease
- m1 (make 1) - an increase worked by inserting the left needle from front to back under the horizontal strand between stitches and knitting through the back loop
- yo (yarn over) - creates openwork or lace effects
- WRT (wrap, replace marker, and turn) - a special technique for short-row shaping that involves slipping a stitch with yarn positioning, replacing the marker on the left needle, and turning the work
Yarn and Materials
The Intemporelle Pullover is constructed using Valley Yarns 2/14 Alpaca Silk, a luxurious blend of 80% alpaca and 20% silk. The yarn provides approximately 1736 yards per cone. The pattern calls for 1 cone (with 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 cones for larger sizes), using approximately 1550 yards for the smallest size, scaling up to 3000 yards for the largest size. The color featured is Pacific.
Needles and Hooks
Multiple needle sizes and types are required for this project:
- US size 8 (5.00 mm) 32" circular needle for the main sweater body
- US size 8 (5.00 mm) 40" or double-pointed needles for sleeve construction, with the option to choose based on personal preference
- US size 6 (4.00 mm) 16" circular needle for the cowl ribbing
- US size 8 (5.00 mm) 16" circular needle for the cowl body
- US size G/6 (4.25 mm) crochet hook for finishing details
Needle size should be adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge.
Gauge and Blocking
The pattern specifies a gauge of 5 stitches and 6½ rows = 1 inch after blocking in stockinette stitch, worked with the larger needles and 2 strands of yarn held together. The pattern notes that gauge can change significantly after blocking, making it essential to block your swatch to ensure accurate sizing before beginning the project.
Cowl Detail
The Intemporelle Pullover features an integrated cowl neckline that adds versatility to the design. The cowl is knit with doubled yarn and provides just enough warmth for transitional days that start cool but warm up by day's end. This feature makes the pullover particularly practical for layering and extended-season wear.
