Valley Yarns 40th Anniversary Jazerant Set

Project Overview

The Jazerant Set, designed by Emma Welford for Valley Yarns' Guest Designer Series #9, is a coordinated knitting project comprising a matching cowl and hat. This intermediate-level set features decorative cable work with optional beaded accents, combining textural interest through cables and ribbed fabric construction.

What Is Being Made

  • Hat: A seamless, worked-in-the-round hat with finished measurements of 20" circumference (unstretched) and 9" deep
  • Cowl: A rectangular cowl measuring 28" long by 9" wide, also constructed seamlessly in the round

Techniques Used

Both pieces in this set employ seamless, bottom-up construction using the worked-in-the-round method with circular needles. This technique eliminates seaming and creates a continuous fabric from the cast-on edge upward. The design incorporates cable work as a primary decorative element, with cables integrated into ribbed fabric sections. Optional beading is included as an embellishment technique, with beads placed on purl stitches using a steel crochet hook to thread each bead onto individual stitches as you work.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The foundation of both pieces is a ribbed pattern stitch, which provides elasticity and structure. Cable stitches are worked over specific stitch groups to create textural raised lines throughout the fabric. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), knit 2 together (k2tog), and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases. Stitch markers are used to denote pattern repeats and chart sections, with the cowl worked over two distinct panels of cable charting while maintaining ribbed pattern work in alternating sections.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Jazerant Set uses Valley Yarns Northfield Hand-Dyed by Malabrigo, a premium yarn blend composed of 70% Merino wool, 20% Baby Alpaca, and 10% Silk. Each 100-gram skein yields 248 yards. The colorway featured is Solis. Yardage requirements are 1 skein for the hat and 2 skeins for the cowl, totaling 3 skeins (744 yards) for the complete set.

The hat is worked on US size 5 (3.75 mm) and US size 6 (4.00 mm) 16-inch circular needles, utilizing needle sizing to create gauge changes. The cowl is worked on a US size 6 (4.00 mm) 24-inch circular needle or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. A cable needle is required for cable work. Optional materials include size 6 beads (44 total) and a #9 steel (1.25 mm) crochet hook for bead placement.

Gauge and Construction Details

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in the ribbed pattern stitch using the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the finished measurements to be accurate. The cowl begins with a cast-on of 154 stitches joined to work in the round, with pattern markers placed to indicate the beginning of the round and chart sections. The hat construction details are structured similarly with marker placement to track pattern repeats.

Difficulty Level

This set is rated as intermediate difficulty, appropriate for knitters with experience in circular needle work, cable techniques, and pattern reading. The combination of ribbed stitch maintenance, cable charting, and optional beading techniques requires solid foundational skills and comfort with multi-stitch pattern management.
