Valley Yarns Valley Cowl
What Is Being Made
The Valley Cowl is a luscious, lacy crocheted cowl designed in an infinity or moebius style. This versatile accessory features finished measurements of approximately 45" circumference by 15" depth, making it suitable for wearing as a shoulder wrap or double-twisted around the head as a hood. The design is worked seamlessly in continuous figure 8 patterns, beginning with a center strip and building outward to create the distinctive moebius construction.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs several key crochet techniques to achieve its elegant structure:
- Moebius or Infinity Construction: The cowl is crocheted in a moebius style, creating a one-sided surface with a continuous twist. This technique begins with a center strip that is then connected and worked in figure 8 circuits.
- Foundation Double Crochet (Fdc): The pattern uses foundation double crochet stitches to create the beginning row, where each stitch includes its own chain at the bottom. This forms the center strip of the moebius and eliminates the need for a separate foundation chain.
- Lace Pattern Work: The cowl features lace patterning throughout, creating an open, delicate fabric. The lace pattern repeats are worked consistently to build the depth of the cowl.
- Seamless Figure 8 Circuits: After the foundation is connected into a moebius round, the cowl is worked in continuous figure 8 patterns. Each complete circuit of the figure 8 adds approximately 5" to the cowl depth, allowing for customization of the final dimensions.
- Flat-Worked Construction: The pattern is worked flat initially before being connected into the moebius form, making it accessible for intermediate crocheters.
Stitches Used
The Valley Cowl utilizes a focused set of fundamental crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch): Used throughout the pattern as a foundational element and within stitch sequences.
- Double Crochet (dc): A primary stitch that forms the body of the cowl and contributes to the lace pattern structure.
- Foundation Double Crochet (Fdc): Specialized stitch used to create the beginning row with integrated chains, forming the center strip of the moebius.
- Single Crochet (sc): Used as needed within the pattern construction.
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Employed to join rounds and connect sections seamlessly.
Materials and Tools
The Valley Cowl sample is crocheted in Valley Yarns Deerfield, a soft yarn blend consisting of 80% Baby Alpaca and 20% silk. The pattern requires 4 skeins of yarn in the Burgundy colorway, with each skein containing 50 grams and 109 yards of yardage. A US Size I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook is recommended, though the pattern notes that any hook size needed to obtain proper gauge may be used. Additional notions include a locking stitch marker and a tapestry needle for finishing.
Gauge and Customization
The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 foundation double crochets over 4 inches and 2 lace pattern repeats over 4 inches, with 5 rows in the lace pattern measuring 2.5 inches. Notably, the pattern includes tips on adjusting dimensions to suit individual preferences. Since each complete circuit of the figure 8 adds approximately 5 inches to the cowl depth, crafters can easily modify the finished depth by adding or subtracting circuits as desired.
Designer
The Valley Cowl was designed by Doris Chan.
