Product Description
Sara Delaney, the designer of Valley Yarns Wheatleigh Hat and gloves, was lucky enough to work at the Wheatleigh Inn overlooking the gorgeous Stockbridge Bowl as a young woman. This hat and glove set was inspired by the buttery-colored bricks of the Inn’s facade, the grays in the rustic gravel drive, and the stunning blue skies. This set is perfect for a great winter getaway in the Berkshires.

Valley Yarns Wheatleigh Hat and Gloves
Project Overview
The Wheatleigh Hat and Gloves is a coordinating crochet set designed by Sara Delaney. This intermediate-level pattern provides instructions for creating both a matching hat and gloves using seamless, worked-in-the-round construction techniques. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to access complete pattern details for both garments in a single resource.
Hat Construction
The hat is constructed using the seamless, worked-in-the-round method, beginning with a small magic ring foundation and expanding through strategic increases. The pattern uses a series of 10 rounds (with additional rounds continuing beyond the provided excerpt) to build the crown and body of the hat. The construction begins with a chain-2 foundation and 9 half double crochet stitches worked into the second chain from the hook, then joined with a slip stitch to create a closed ring.
Shaping is achieved through evenly distributed increases worked in the back loop only. The pattern employs a systematic increase sequence across multiple rounds, doubling stitches at regular intervals to create gradual expansion. Early rounds feature increases every 1-2 stitches, progressing to increases spaced every 3-6 stitches as the hat widens, allowing the fabric to grow from the crown downward while maintaining a smooth, fitted silhouette.
Gloves Construction
The gloves are also worked seamlessly in the round using crochet techniques. While the complete glove instructions are not fully detailed in the provided excerpt, the pattern follows similar construction principles to the hat, utilizing the same foundational stitches and techniques for a coordinated appearance.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): The primary stitch used throughout both the hat and gloves, providing a dense, structured fabric suitable for a fitted accessory
- Chain Stitch (ch): Used for foundations and turning chains
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless connections
- Back Loop Only (bl) Stitching: Worked throughout the pattern to create texture and definition while maintaining stitch placement precision
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): A special stitch technique involving yarn over, inserting the hook from front-back-front around the post of the next stitch, then completing the double crochet as normal
- Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): A complementary post stitch worked from back-front-back around the stitch post, creating ribbed or textured effects
- Back Loop Half Double Crochet (blhdc): A specialized decrease technique combining yarn over with back loop insertion to reduce stitch count
- Decrease (dec): A custom decrease method worked in the back loop only, inserting the hook twice and pulling through all loops together to reduce stitch count
Seamless, Worked-in-the-Round Construction
Both the hat and gloves utilize seamless, worked-in-the-round construction, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous, tubular fabric. This technique involves joining each round with a slip stitch and continuing with chain stitches that count as the first stitch of the following round. Working in the round produces a more professional finish and ensures even stitch distribution around the circumference of each garment.
Materials
The pattern calls for yarn in a main color (referenced as MC in the instructions) and requires an appropriate crochet hook size to be used with the selected yarn. Specific yarn weight, yardage requirements, and hook size recommendations are contained within the complete PDF pattern document.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with post stitches, custom decreases, and seamless in-the-round construction techniques.
