Product Description

A most unusual and fun way to make Valley Yarns Purless Pullover, a one-piece, seamless sweater without any purling: nalgar sleeves! This construction method makes built-in sleeves that get longer as they get wider, so it’s great for warm weather, shorter-sleeved garments—especially when they are knit in cotton blends like Valley Yarns Goshen! Worked in the round from the bottom up, it also features a cute garter stitch yoke that highlights the construction and avoids purling.

Valley Yarns Purlless Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Purlless Pullover is a one-piece, seamless pullover sweater designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This garment features an innovative construction method that eliminates purling entirely, making it an accessible option for knitters who prefer working with knit stitches. The pullover is worked from the bottom up and includes built-in sleeves that increase in length and width as the yoke is shaped, making it particularly well-suited for warm weather or shorter-sleeved garments.

Construction and Techniques

The Purlless Pullover employs a unique two-part construction technique that combines both flat and in-the-round knitting methods:

  • Lower Body: Two separate pieces are cast on and worked flat in garter stitch (knit every row) for 7 rows each. These pieces are then joined in the round at a designated marker, creating a seamless tube.
  • Body: Once joined, the lower body is worked in the round using stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the desired length is reached, typically 15 to 17.5 inches from the cast-on edge depending on size.
  • Yoke Shaping: The yoke transitions back to flat knitting and features strategic increases worked with yarn overs and knit stitches. Decreases at the edges are created using knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) techniques. The yoke includes multiple marker placements to denote sleeve sections and front/back divisions.
  • Sleeve Integration: Built-in sleeves are created through the yoke shaping process, with sleeve stitches bound off separately using the three-needle bind-off method, which joins two sets of live stitches together seamlessly.

Stitches Used

The Purlless Pullover relies exclusively on knit-based stitches to achieve its design:

  • Knit Stitch (K): The foundation stitch used throughout the entire garment, creating the fabric texture in both flat and in-the-round sections.
  • Garter Stitch: Formed by knitting every row when working flat, used in the initial cast-on sections and transitions.
  • Stockinette Stitch: Created by knitting every round when working in the round, forming the smooth fabric of the lower body.
  • Yarn Over (YO): Used strategically in the yoke to create decorative increases that shape the garment and add visual interest.
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used at the edges of the yoke for shaping.
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease used at the edges of the yoke to balance the k2tog decreases.
  • Three-Needle Bind-Off: A joining technique used to bind off sleeve stitches while simultaneously attaching them to adjacent sections, creating a strong, seamless finish.

Materials and Sizing

The pattern is available in six sizes, with stitch counts ranging from 72 to 118 stitches for the initial cast-on, which doubles to 144 to 236 stitches when both pieces are joined in the round. The yoke depth ranges from 7 to 9.5 inches depending on size. While specific yarn weight and needle size recommendations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, Valley Yarns Purlless Pullover is designed to be worked with appropriate yarn and needles for the chosen size. The downloadable PDF format allows knitters to access the complete pattern details, including yarn requirements and needle specifications.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate pattern, the Purlless Pullover requires familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques including working in the round, flat knitting, yarn overs, decreases, and the three-needle bind-off method. The elimination of purling makes this design more approachable than traditional pullover patterns while still offering the challenge of managing multiple sections and strategic shaping.

I am about 1/3 of the way knitting the body of this simple pullover (not being a very fast knitter), and I'm enjoying it. I'm really curious how the sleeves will unfold, as I've never done a nalgar sleeve. I liked the photo on the pattern page, and I hope it fits and looks as good on me as it does on the model! If it does, I'll try to upload a photo...If it doesn't, I'll just have to order more yarn and adjust the size.
