The Valley Yarns Bumblebee Set is an intermediate-level knitting project that combines a coordinated baby blanket and hat, both featuring a charming honeycomb cable pattern adorned with decorative knit and crocheted bumblebees. This downloadable PDF pattern offers three size options for both garments, making it adaptable for babies from newborn through three years old.
The blanket is worked flat using the bottom-up construction method and features a sophisticated cable stitch pattern. Available in three finished sizes—32" x 32", 36" x 36", and 40" x 40"—the blanket accommodates growing babies and different nursery spaces.
Construction Technique: The blanket center panel is worked flat on the largest needles using a repeating cable pattern stitch. The pattern stitch is based on a multiple of 8 stitches plus 4, creating the signature honeycomb effect through right cable (RC) and left cable (LC) maneuvers. Knit and purl stitches form the foundation, with cables crossed using a cable needle to hold stitches to the back or front, then knitting across to create the dimensional texture.
Color Work: The blanket features Valley Yarns Superwash DK in color 10 Yellow as the main color, complemented by color 03 Black for contrast. The striped bumblebee embellishments use scraps of color 01 Natural.
Materials Required: The blanket requires 8, 10, or 12 skeins of Valley Yarns Superwash DK (100% Superfine Merino Wool, 137 yards per skein) depending on size selection, plus 1 skein each of black and small amounts of natural.
The coordinating hat is designed to fit babies aged 9-12 months, 2 years, or 3 years, and is worked seamlessly in the round using the same cable pattern found on the blanket.
Construction Technique: The hat begins with a center panel worked flat, then transitions to side panels picked up and knit from the edges. The seamless construction in the round creates a polished, professional finish without visible seams. The cable pattern repeats create visual interest and texture throughout the hat.
Materials Required: The hat uses 1 skein each of Valley Yarns Superwash DK in color 10 Yellow and color 03 Black, with scraps of natural for bee details.
Both the hat and blanket are decorated with adorable knit and crocheted bumblebees that add whimsy and visual appeal to the set.
Knit Bee Bodies: Four bumblebees are made for the hat and ten for the blanket. Each body is constructed using the smallest needles with black yarn, beginning with a two-stitch cast-on and increasing with kfb (knit in front and back of stitch) stitches. The body features alternating stripes of black and yellow yarn, creating the classic bumblebee coloring. Decreases using k2tog (knit 2 together) shape the body, which is then bound off and stuffed using yarn ends.
Crocheted Wings: Two wings are created for each bee using a crochet hook and natural-colored yarn. Wings begin with a chain-4 foundation, then incorporate single crochet and double crochet stitches to form delicate, dimensional wings. The wings are sewn to the sides of each bee body.
Assembly: Completed bumblebees are positioned at varied intervals across both the hat and blanket, creating visual interest and a cohesive design theme throughout the set.
