Valley Yarns Baby Steps Cardigan
What is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Baby Steps Cardigan is a knitted baby cardigan designed by Kirsten Hipsky for infants and toddlers in sizes 0-3 months through 12-24 months, with finished chest widths ranging from 16 to 22 inches. This garment is inspired by the geometric construction of the Star Paths Cardigan and offers a smaller-scale version perfect for introducing knitters to advanced construction techniques. The cardigan features a distinctive center-back starting point that radiates outward and then back inward for the front panels, creating a unique architectural design.
Knitting Techniques
The Baby Steps Cardigan employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that make it an excellent project for developing skills:
- Radial Construction: The cardigan is uniquely started from the center back, expanding outward through strategic increases, then contracting back inward for the front sections. This method creates geometric precision and visual interest.
- Lace Eyelets: Decorative eyelets are incorporated throughout the design using yarn overs to create openwork patterns that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, helping mark progression rows and adding visual guidance during knitting.
- Seaming: Finished pieces are seamed together to create the final garment structure, requiring careful attention to alignment and tension.
- Buttonholes and Buttons: The cardigan includes buttonhole construction for closure, with provisions for button placement. The pattern notes that one small button is optional, allowing for customization.
- Stitch Markers and Increases: The pattern uses multiple stitch markers placed strategically to track pattern repeats and shaping. Increases are worked using yarn overs and knit-front-and-back (kfb) stitches to create the radiating expansion.
Stitches Used
The Baby Steps Cardigan utilizes fundamental knitting stitches executed with precision:
- Knit Stitch (k): The primary stitch forming the garter stitch base fabric.
- Knit Two Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping.
- Knit Front and Back (kfb): An increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used in early rows to establish the foundation.
- Yarn Over (yo): Creates the decorative eyelets and lace elements while simultaneously increasing stitch count for the radiating expansion.
- Slip Stitch as if to Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease providing balanced shaping options.
- Garter Stitch: The primary fabric texture, created by knitting every row, providing a reversible, textured finish appropriate for baby garments.
Materials and Tools
The Valley Yarns Baby Steps Cardigan is crafted using quality materials specifically chosen for baby wear:
- Yarn: One skein of Valley Yarns Charlemont Hand-Dyed in the color Sage Flower. This yarn contains 60% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Mulberry Silk, and 20% Polyamide, providing 100 grams and 439 yards per skein. The blend offers softness, durability, and easy care properties ideal for baby garments.
- Needles: US size 4 (3.5mm) circular needles in a 32-inch length, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. The specific length of the circular needles is not crucial to the pattern's success.
- Crochet Hook: A US size E (3.5mm) crochet hook is required, likely for finishing techniques such as hem or edging work.
- Notions: Four stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping sections, scrap yarn to serve as stitch holders for placing stitches on hold during construction, and one small optional button for closure.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern specifies a gauge of 6 stitches and 12 rows equaling 1 inch when worked in garter stitch. The cardigan is available in four sizes accommodating children from newborn through toddler stages, with finished chest measurements of 16 inches (0-3 months), 18 inches (3-6 months), 20 inches (6-12 months), and 22 inches (12
