Product Description

The Valley Yarns Hen Plaid Wrap uses simple stripes and surface crochet to create a lovely plaid fabric in colors that remind us of a pretty spring chicken. The fringe eliminates the need to weave in loose ends, and soft, silky Valley Yarns Goshen makes it next-to-the-skin soft. Knit is Goshen, one of the softest cotton blends you can find. The Modal® and silk not only add a slight sheen but also enhance the durability of this gorgeous yarn. Garments made with Goshen will not pill and will stand the test of time.

Valley Yarns Hen Plaid Wrap

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Hen Plaid Wrap is a rectangular shawl and wrap designed by Kirsten Hipsky, measuring 16 inches wide by 48 inches long. This accessory features a charming plaid pattern created through the combination of knitted stripes and surface crochet embellishment. The finished wrap is designed to be soft and drape beautifully, making it suitable for layering or wearing as a lightweight shawl.

Techniques Used

This wrap is created using seamless knitting worked flat on circular needles, combined with stripe patterning and surface crochet techniques. The design incorporates strategic color changes to build the plaid effect without the need for complex colorwork methods. A unique feature of this pattern is the self-fringing technique, where the first and last 12 stitches of each row are intentionally left unraveled during the bind-off process, creating natural fringe while eliminating the need to weave in loose ends.

Stitches Used

The Valley Yarns Hen Plaid Wrap primarily uses fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The pattern also incorporates reverse stockinette stitch sections created by strategic placement of purl stitches on the right side and knit stitches on the wrong side. These stitches are separated by stitch markers placed throughout the cast-on row to maintain pattern alignment. Surface crochet is used to add the plaid lines that complete the design aesthetic.

Materials and Specifications

The wrap requires Valley Yarns Goshen yarn, a blend of 48% Peruvian Cotton, 46% Modal, and 6% Silk. Each skein contains 50 grams and yields 92 yards. The pattern calls for 6 skeins in Fawn (Color A), which serves as the primary color, plus 1 skein each of Ginger (Color B), Mulberry (Color C), Plum (Color D), and Purple Haze (Color E) for the stripe accents. The yarn composition creates a soft, next-to-the-skin feel ideal for a wrap worn close to the body.

Needles required include US size 8 (5.00mm) 40-inch circular needles, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. A 5.00mm crochet hook is also needed for the surface crochet embellishment that creates the plaid pattern. Additional materials include stitch markers to organize the pattern repeats throughout the knitting process.

Gauge and Difficulty

The wrap is worked at a gauge of approximately 4 stitches and 6 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. The pattern notes that exact gauge is not critical for this project, making it forgiving for knitters still developing their tension control. The beginner difficulty level makes this wrap an excellent choice for newer knitters looking to expand their skills beyond basic projects while still working with straightforward stitch techniques and manageable construction methods.
