The Valley Yarns Essential Fingerless Mitts are a practical, well-fitted pair of fingerless gloves designed by Kirsten Hipsky. These mitts combine functionality with style, making them ideal for both outdoor work requiring dexterity and indoor wear. The no-frills design allows them to be worn comfortably under cuffless mittens on extremely cold days, or worn independently to add a pop of color to any outfit while keeping hands and wrists warm. Available in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—with hand circumferences of 7", 7.5", and 8" respectively, these mitts accommodate a range of hand sizes.
These fingerless gloves are worked in the round using the bottom-up construction method, creating a seamless, comfortable fit. The seamless construction eliminates bulky seams that would be uncomfortable against the skin, particularly important for a close-fitting hand garment. The mitts feature a thumb gusset, a structured shaping technique that creates extra room around the thumb base for improved mobility and comfort. This gusset is increased using strategic increases worked on either side of marked stitches, allowing the thumb area to expand gradually as you work upward from the cuff.
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for an intermediate skill level. The cuff is worked in ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2x1 pattern), which provides elasticity and helps the mitts stay securely in place on the wrist. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch (abbreviated St st), the most basic and commonly used stitch in knitting, which creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for showing off yarn color. The pattern also uses make-one increases (M1R and M1L—make one right and make one left) to shape the thumb gusset, and bind-off techniques to secure stitches when creating the thumb opening.
The Valley Yarns Essential Fingerless Mitts are designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Valley Yarns Northampton, a 100% wool yarn available in 100-gram skeins with 247 yards of yardage. One skein is sufficient to complete a pair of mitts in any size. The sample shown was knitted in the color Amethyst. Worsted weight yarn is a medium-weight yarn that knits at a moderate gauge, making it quick to work up while still providing warmth and durability.
The pattern calls for US size 7 (4.50mm) double-pointed needles as the primary needle size for working the main body of the mitts. An optional US size 6 (4.00mm) double-pointed needles set is suggested for the cuff ribbing, as smaller needles create a tighter, more refined appearance in the ribbed section. The pattern notes that while smaller needles improve the look and fit of the ribbing, they are not absolutely essential; standard casting-on tension should work for most knitters. However, those with extremely tight cast-on tension or larger forearms may prefer to cast on with the larger needles for easier working. The gauge is 5 stitches per 1 inch in stockinette stitch using the larger needles, which is important to match for proper fit.
The pattern is organized into three main sections: the cuff, the thumb gusset, and the palm. The cuff begins with casting on 36 (39, 42) stitches distributed evenly among double-pointed needles and joined in the round. Knitters work a 2x1 ribbed pattern for 4 inches or to desired cuff length. The thumb gusset is created by switching to larger needles and working strategic increases on either side of marked stitches over several rounds, gradually expanding the stitches between the purl markers. The palm section involves binding off the thumb gusset stitches and casting on new stitches to close the gap, creating the opening through which the thumb passes. This construction method ensures a custom fit around the hand while providing adequate space for the thumb.
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with fundamental techniques including casting on, knitting and purling, working in the round with double-pointed needles, increasing stitches, and binding off. The seamless, in-
