Valley Yarns Crossroads Pullover
What Is Being Made
The Crossroads Pullover is a crocheted pullover sweater designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This intermediate-level garment features a unique construction method where two squares that expand from the center outward form the body of the sweater. The finished pullover is available in six sizes ranging from 36 inches to 56 inches in circumference. The design creates a sheer, lacy fabric ideal for layering, with a flattering draped V-neck on both the front and back. Cap sleeves form naturally from the corner draping of the expanding squares, eliminating the need for traditional sleeve shaping.
Techniques Used
This crochet pullover employs several key construction techniques that make it both ingenious and accessible for intermediate crocheters:
- Center-Out Expansion: The sweater begins with a ring and expands outward in a square shape, allowing the garment to grow organically from the center.
- Flat Construction: Although the pattern begins with a ring, the shape is worked back and forth in rows rather than in continuous rounds. The beginning and end of each row run straight down the middle of one side of the square.
- Lace Patterning: Fine yarn and a loose gauge create an open, sheer lacy fabric throughout the garment.
- Strategic Splitting: While the beginning and end of the initial ring are joined together, they are eventually split to form the V-neck on both the front and back of the sweater.
- Seamed Construction: The shoulders are single crocheted together, and the side seams are crocheted shut, leaving the upper portion open for armholes.
- Minimal Shaping: The draped V-neck and cap sleeves form naturally from the corner draping of the expanding squares, requiring no additional shaping or increases.
Stitches Used
The Crossroads Pullover utilizes fundamental crochet stitches that create both structure and lacy openness:
- Chain (ch): Used to create the foundation ring and spacing throughout the pattern.
- Double Crochet (dc): The primary stitch used to build the body of the sweater, worked at a gauge of approximately 4 stitches and 4 rows per inch.
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seams when closing the shoulders and side seams.
- Single Crochet (sc): Used to join the shoulders together securely.
The pattern features chain-space corners that expand as rows are added, creating the characteristic square shape that eventually forms the pullover's body.
Materials
The Crossroads Pullover is designed to be worked with specific materials that contribute to its lightweight, lacy drape:
- Yarn: Valley Yarns 2/10 Merino Tencel, a blend of 50% Merino wool and 50% Tencel. The yardage required varies by size: 790 yards for the smallest size (36"), increasing to 1,890 yards for the largest size (56"). The yarn is available in Black and comes in cones of 1,540 yards per 8.8 ounces.
- Hook: US size G/6 (4.00mm) crochet hook, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge.
- Gauge: Approximately 4 stitches and 4 rows equal 1 inch when worked in double crochet. The pattern notes that exact gauge is not crucial, allowing for some flexibility in tension.
Design Features
The Crossroads Pullover incorporates several thoughtful design elements that enhance both its aesthetic and wearability. The adjustable draped V-neck on the front and back creates a flattering neckline that can be worn at varying depths depending on preference. The cap sleeves form without traditional armhole shaping, emerging naturally from the corner draping of the expanding squares. The sheer, lacy fabric created by the fine yarn and loose gauge makes this pullover particularly suitable for layering over other garments, offering versatility for various seasons and styling options.
