Valley Yarns Grayson Baby Set

Overview

The Grayson Baby Set is a coordinated collection of three knitted projects designed by Kirsten Hipsky: a striped blanket, a pullover sweater, and a matching hat. This advanced beginner pattern set features charming chevron stripe details worked in three complementary colors from Valley Yarns Haydenville yarn. The set offers flexibility with multiple size options, making it suitable for babies from newborn through three years old.

Projects Included

Blanket

The blanket measures 28 inches wide by 36 inches long and serves as the foundation project of the set. It is worked flat using larger needles and features the signature chevron stripe pattern that coordinates with the other pieces. The blanket requires the most yardage of the set, using 4 skeins of the main color.

Pullover Sweater

The pullover is offered in four finished sizes: 18 inches (to fit 0-6 months), 20 inches (to fit 6-12 months), 22 inches (to fit 1-2 years), and 24 inches (to fit 2-3 years). The sweater is constructed using a top-down method, which allows for easy adjustments to length during knitting. This construction technique makes it simple to customize the garment to the desired finished length. The yoke is worked in the round, and the pullover incorporates the same chevron stripe pattern found on the blanket.

Hat

Two hat sizes are available: 14 inches around and 7 inches tall (to fit baby), and 16 inches around and 8 inches tall (to fit toddler). The hat is worked in the round and features the coordinating chevron stripe design. It includes ribbed edging and crown decreases to shape the crown.

Techniques and Construction Methods

The Grayson Baby Set employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for advanced beginners:

  • Top-down construction: The pullover is worked from the yoke downward, a method that provides flexibility for adjusting garment length and ensuring proper fit before completing the project.
  • Worked in the round: Both the hat and pullover utilize circular needles to create seamless, tubular fabric.
  • Worked flat: The blanket is constructed flat using straight needles or the flat method on circular needles.
  • Chevron stripes: A decorative stitch pattern that creates diagonal lines of color changes. The chevron is worked using knit and purl stitches combined with increases (right-leaning increase and left-leaning increase) and decreases (k2tog and ssk) to form the characteristic V-shaped pattern.
  • Crown decreases: The hat features structured crown shaping using paired decreases worked at regular intervals to taper the top.
  • Ribbing: The hat includes k1, p1 ribbing at the brim for stretch and a finished edge.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout all three projects, creating a smooth, classic fabric.
  • Knit and purl stitches: Used individually and in combination for ribbing and the chevron stripe pattern.
  • Decreases: K2tog (knit two together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) are used for shaping and creating the chevron pattern structure.
  • Increases: Right-leaning increase (RLinc) and left-leaning increase (LLinc) are incorporated into the chevron stitch pattern to create the directional design.
  • Stitch markers: Used to mark pattern repeats and decrease positions for accurate shaping.

Yarn and Materials

All three projects are knitted with Valley Yarns Haydenville, a blend of 60% Superwash Merino and 40% Acrylic Microfiber. This fiber content provides durability, easy care, and softness suitable for baby garments. Each skein contains 220 yards and weighs 100 grams.

The yarn is worked in three colors throughout the set:

  • Color 04 Lt Grey (MC): The main color used as the primary yarn across all three projects.
