Valley Yarns Maple Baby Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Maple Baby Cardigan is a lightweight, textured cardigan designed for infants and toddlers in sizes 0-6, 6-12, 12-18, and 24 months. This cozy layering piece is ideal for keeping little ones warm during transitional seasons. The finished chest measurements range from 18 to 22.5 inches depending on size, making it a versatile addition to a baby's wardrobe.

Construction Method

This cardigan is knit from the bottom up, a construction technique that begins with the body before moving to the sleeves. The body is worked flat, while the sleeves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles. Once the body and sleeves are completed separately, all three pieces are joined together and knit as one piece through the yoke. Button bands are added later by picking up stitches around the front edges, creating a finished, polished look.

Techniques Used

  • Bottom-up construction: The garment is built starting from the lower body and progressing upward to the yoke
  • Flat knitting: The body is worked flat on circular needles
  • Circular knitting: The sleeves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles
  • Cable work: Cable stitches are incorporated into the design using a cable needle
  • Buttonholes: Functional buttonholes are created during construction for button closure
  • Button bands: Stitches are picked up around the front edges to create button bands and finishing bands
  • Stitch markers: Two different types or colors of stitch markers are used to track pattern repeats and construction points

Stitches Used

  • Garter Rib: A textured stitch pattern used for the body when worked flat (alternating purl and knit stitches on wrong-side rows with knit rows on right-side rows) and adapted for working in the round. This stitch creates vertical ribbing with horizontal garter texture
  • Moss Stitch: An even-numbered stitch pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard formation. Rows 1 and 2 work as *K1, p1, repeat from *, while Rows 3 and 4 reverse to *P1, k1, repeat from *. This creates a subtle, textured fabric
  • Cable stitches: Twisted stitches created with a cable needle to add visual interest and dimension to the cardigan
  • Ribbing: Used in the cast-on setup and initial rounds to create structure and elasticity
  • Standard abbreviations: Pattern uses common knitting abbreviations including k (knit), p (purl), k2tog (knit 2 together), ssk (slip, slip, knit), CO (cast on), BO (bind off), and slm (slip marker)

Materials

The Valley Yarns Maple Baby Cardigan is made using Valley Yarns Conway yarn in the color Cappuccino (color 04). This yarn is a blend of 60% pima cotton and 40% acrylic, providing a soft, breathable fabric suitable for babies. Each skein yields 127 yards and weighs 50 grams. Depending on the size, the pattern requires 2 to 3 skeins of yarn.

Needles and Tools: Construction requires US 5 (3.75mm) needles in two formats: a 29-inch circular needle for working the body flat and double-pointed needles (dpns) for working the sleeves in the round. Additional tools include a cable needle for cable work, two different types or colors of stitch markers to distinguish different sections, and stitch holders or scrap yarn for holding stitches temporarily during construction.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in moss stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, as the finished chest measurements are precisely calculated at 18 inches (0-6 months), 19.5 inches (6-12 months), 21 inches (12-18 months), and 22.5 inches (24 months).
