Valley Yarns Trouville Pullover

What is Being Made

The Trouville Pullover is a warm-weather women's pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman. This graceful garment features elbow-length sleeves, a keyhole neckline, and a split hem. Available in seven sizes ranging from 32" to 56" bust, the pullover is designed to flatter all figures with strategic waist shaping. The finished garment offers versatility suitable for both office wear and evening occasions.

Techniques Used

This pullover is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, worked-flat method. The body pieces are knitted separately back and forth in rows from the hem to the armholes, allowing for precise waist decreases and shaping. The design incorporates short-row shaping at the shoulders for a custom fit. Elbow-length sleeves are worked top-down using circular needles. The garment is then seamed together, creating clean, professional finishing throughout.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch throughout the pullover, creating a smooth, elegant fabric with beautiful drape
  • Knit and Purl Combinations – Edge stitches (K1, p to last st, k1) create finished selvages
  • Decreases – K2tog (knit 2 together) and SSK (slip, slip, knit) for armhole and waist shaping
  • Bind-off and Cast-on – Standard techniques for establishing and closing edges

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Trouville Pullover is designed to showcase Valley Yarns Colrain, a luxurious 50% Merino/50% Tencel blend yarn. This fiber combination provides beautiful drape and a silky sheen characteristic of Tencel. Yarn requirements range from 7 skeins (smallest size) to 14 skeins (largest size), with each skein containing 50 grams and 109 yards. The sample shown is knitted in Burgundy colorway.

Needles and Tools

Construction requires US size 6 (4.00 mm) needles for the main fabric and US size 4 (3.50 mm) needles for ribbing or edging. Needle sizes include 16" and 24-40" circular needles, as well as double-pointed needles (dpn) in both sizes. Additional materials include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch. The pullover is designed to fit with ½" to 1" negative bust ease, creating a flattering, close-fitting silhouette. Finished bust measurements accommodate a wide range: 32", 36", 40", 44", 48", 52", and 56" (sample shown in size 36").

Design Features

The Trouville Pullover incorporates several sophisticated design elements. Waist shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at regular intervals, enhancing the garment's flattering silhouette. The keyhole neckline adds an elegant detail suitable for layering or wearing alone. A split hem provides movement and comfort, while the elbow-length sleeves offer a refined, professional appearance. Short-row shaping at the shoulders ensures proper fit and comfort across the upper body.
