Valley Yarns Cobblestone Crescent Shawl
Project Overview
The Cobblestone Crescent Shawl, designed by Julie Turjoman, is an intermediate-level knitted wrap featuring a sophisticated blend of textured and lace stitching techniques. This crescent-shaped shawl measures 60 inches in length with a 16-inch depth, making it a versatile accessory suitable for year-round wear. The design showcases a unique visual interplay between slip-stitch texturing and delicate lace patterning, creating a garment that is equally beautiful when viewed from either side.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This shawl is crafted using 3 skeins of Valley Yarns Granville, a summery cotton-blend yarn composed of 90% Pima Cotton and 10% Wool. Each skein contains 50 grams and yields 167 yards (153 meters) of DK weight yarn in the Natural colorway. The natural fiber content provides breathability and softness, making this an excellent choice for a wrap that transitions seamlessly across seasons.
Knitters will need a US Size 4 (3.50mm) circular needle measuring 32 to 40 inches (80 to 100 centimeters) in length, or the size required to achieve proper gauge. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving correct gauge is essential for this project. The slip-stitch textured sections should measure 22 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked on US Size 4 needles. The lace stitch pattern section requires a slightly looser gauge of 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) on the same needle size. These two different gauges reflect the varying density between the textured body and the openwork border.
Knitting Techniques
The Cobblestone Crescent Shawl employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create its distinctive character:
- Top-Down Construction: The shawl is worked from the top downward, allowing knitters to try on the piece as it grows and easily adjust the final length if desired.
- Worked Flat: Despite using a circular needle, the shawl is worked back and forth in flat rows rather than in the round, making it accessible to knitters who prefer traditional flat knitting methods.
- Slip-Stitch Linen Stitch: This textured stitch creates a reversible fabric with visual interest on both sides. The slip-stitch technique involves slipping stitches purlwise to create elongated stitches that produce a woven appearance.
- Lace Border: A graceful lace border transitions the shawl's edge, featuring yarn overs and decreases that create an openwork pattern. The lace border stitch repeats over a multiple of 18 stitches across 8-row pattern repeats.
- Picot Bind-Off: The shawl concludes with a decorative picot bind-off edge, which creates small loops along the finished edge for an elegant, refined finish.
Stitch Abbreviations and Construction Details
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including K (knit), P (purl), K1tbl (knit one through back loop), K2tog and K3tog (knit decreases), Kfb (knit into front and back for increases), M1L and M1R (make one left and right increases), and BO (bind off). The shawl construction involves multiple repetitions of 4-row and 18-row sequences, with strategic increases worked at the edges and midpoint to create the crescent shape. The final stitch count builds progressively, reaching 312 stitches before the lace border application.
Design Features
The interplay between the slip-stitch textured body and the delicate lace border creates visual depth and interest. The reversible nature of the Linen stitch means this shawl can be worn with either side facing outward, providing styling versatility. The crescent shape and generous dimensions make it suitable for draping across the shoulders as a wrap or wearing as a traditional shawl pinned at the center back.
