Valley Yarns Glymur Icelandic Pullover Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Glymur is a modern Icelandic-inspired pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman. This stylish fall and winter garment features a contemporary split front design combined with traditional ribbed edges, drawing inspiration from Iceland's natural beauty, specifically the Glymur waterfall. The sweater is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 32½ inches to 60 inches, offering a relaxed fit with ½ to 3 inches of positive ease.

Construction Technique

Glymur is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless approach worked primarily in the round. The body is knitted from the cast-on edge upward to the yoke, utilizing circular needles for the majority of the construction. This method creates a continuous tube of fabric, eliminating the need for seaming and providing a smooth, professional finish. The sweater incorporates stranded colorwork techniques to create its distinctive patterned design using multiple yarn colors.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout Glymur is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The sweater features ribbed edges that provide structure and elasticity at the cuffs, hem, and neckline. Stranded colorwork is employed to create the patterned sections, requiring the knitter to carry multiple yarn colors across the row while maintaining even tension. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases, including lifted increases (LLI and RLI) worked at side markers to create symmetrical bust shaping and yoke shaping for proper garment fit.

Yarn and Materials

Valley Yarns Glymur calls for Valley Yarns Berkshire, a single-ply worsted-weight yarn composed of 85% wool and 15% alpaca. This blend provides warmth and softness ideal for cold-weather wear. The pattern requires multiple colors: the main color (MC) is Stonewashed Heather (#52), with contrasting colors including Black (#7), Fuchsia (#19), and Cream (#1). Yarn quantities range from 5 to 11 skeins depending on size, with each skein weighing 100 grams and containing 141 yards. The pattern specifies US size 8 (5.00 mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 24-40 inch lengths, along with US size 8 double-pointed needles and US size 7 (4.50 mm) circular needles for ribbed sections. Additional materials include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements and fit. The pattern provides detailed instructions for nine sizes with specific stitch counts ranging from 152 stitches for the smallest size to 264 stitches for the largest.

Difficulty Level

Glymur is classified as an advanced knitting project. This difficulty rating reflects the combination of techniques required: seamless in-the-round construction, stranded colorwork, multiple color management, and precise shaping throughout the body and yoke. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques, reading colorwork charts, and executing increases and decreases before attempting this pattern.
