Valley Yarns Prosecco Knit Sweater

What Is Being Made

Prosecco is a sophisticated knit sweater designed by Julie Turjoman, crafted as an elegant option for special occasions such as office holiday parties and girls' nights out. This intermediate-level garment features feminine waist shaping, a square neckline, and elbow-length sleeves. The design offers seven sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, with finished bust measurements from 32 inches to 56 inches and designed to fit with 0 to 2 inches of positive ease.

Techniques and Construction

Prosecco is worked in the round from the bottom up, a construction method that minimizes seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. The pattern incorporates vertical slip-stitch columns as a decorative stitch texture element, which are strategically placed and repeated throughout the body and sleeves. The vertical columns pattern is established and continued with precision, with new slip-stitch columns added at regular intervals (every 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, or 14 rounds depending on size) until no further columns can be accommodated within the garment width.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, worked in the round for a smooth, classic fabric texture
  • Vertical Slip-Stitch Columns: A decorative patterning technique that creates visual interest and stitch definition, worked as established columns that are maintained and expanded throughout construction
  • K1/P1 Ribbing: Used for finishing edges and creating elasticity, worked as knit one, purl one in alternating sequence

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Valley Yarns Northfield is the specified yarn for this project, a premium blend composed of 70% Merino Wool, 20% Baby Alpaca, and 10% Silk. The yarn is valued for its beautiful stitch definition and soft hand against the skin. Yardage requirements range from 868 yards (7 balls) for size XS to 1,736 yards (14 balls) for size 3XL, with each ball containing 124 yards at 50 grams. The sample shown is worked in color 28 Jade.

Needles: The pattern requires two needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and fabric control. US 6 (4mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32 to 40-inch lengths, along with double-pointed needles, are used for the main fabric. US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in the same lengths and double-pointed needles are used for ribbed edgings and cuffs. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge.

Additional Materials: Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, including 2 unique markers and 4 matching markers for the body, plus 5 locking markers for sleeves and neckband work. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends and finishing.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, blocked, using US 6 (4.0mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the garment fits as designed. The sweater is engineered with feminine waist shaping to create a flattering silhouette, and sizing options allow for either close-fitting garments (at natural bust size) or additional positive ease (by selecting the next size up).
