Valley Yarns Iolite Knit Tunic Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Iolite is a knitted tunic designed by Julie Turjoman, perfect as a layering piece that showcases a rich color palette. This intermediate-level project features a sophisticated mosaic border that creates striking visual contrast. The tunic is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 34 inches to 61½ inches, and is designed to fit with 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable layering over other garments.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The tunic is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on and adjust fit as they progress
  • Worked flat: Pieces are knitted in flat rows rather than in continuous rounds, then seamed together for a polished finish
  • Seamed construction: Individual pieces are joined using a tapestry needle and matching thread, creating clean, professional seams
  • Striped mosaic border: A decorative mosaic border pattern alternates between main color and contrast color, with slipped stitches creating the distinctive textured design
  • Circular needle knitting: Both 16-inch and 32–40 inch circular needles are used throughout the pattern, along with double-pointed needles (DPNs) for smaller sections

Stitches Used

The Iolite pattern incorporates fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout the tunic body, creating a smooth, classic fabric with excellent drape
  • Mosaic border stitch: A multi-row stitch pattern worked over a 12-stitch multiple that combines knit stitches with slipped stitches in alternating colors. The mosaic border uses six rows per repeat, with rows 1–2 and rows 5–6 worked in contrast color (CC), while rows 3–4 are worked in main color (MC). Slipped stitches create the characteristic texture and color blocking effect without requiring complex colorwork techniques
  • Decreases: K2tog (knit 2 together) and P2tog (purl 2 together) for shaping
  • Increases: M1L and M1R (make 1 left and make 1 right) for adding stitches during shaping
  • Bind-off: Standard bind-off to secure finished edges

Materials and Gauge

The Iolite is knitted using Valley Yarns Northfield, a premium DK weight yarn composed of 70% Merino Wool, 20% Baby Alpaca, and 10% Silk. This fiber blend provides excellent stitch definition, allowing the mosaic border pattern to stand out clearly. Each skein contains 124 yards and weighs 50 grams.

The pattern requires two colors: the main color (MC) is Color 401 Lt. Gray, with 8–11 skeins needed depending on size. The contrast color (CC) is Color 11 Balsam, requiring 2–5 skeins based on the finished size.

Needles are sized to achieve the specified gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch. Knitters use US 6 (4.00 mm) circular needles and DPNs for the main fabric and US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles and DPNs for ribbing or other sections requiring a tighter gauge. Both needle sizes come in 16-inch and 32–40 inch lengths to accommodate different sections of the garment.

Additional materials include stitch markers (including four locking stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats), a tapestry needle for seaming, a sewing needle with matching thread for attaching buttons, and five buttons with ½-inch diameter for closures.

Design Highlights

The mosaic border stitch is the signature design element of this tunic. By combining slipped stitches with two contrasting colors—Light Gray and Balsam—the pattern creates a bold, geometric visual effect without requiring traditional stranded colorwork. This technique is more manageable for
