Valley Yarns Cayenne Pullover: Knitted Children's Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Cayenne is a pullover sweater designed for children, available in seven size options ranging from 6-12 months through 10-12 years. Finished chest measurements span from 19 inches for the smallest size to 32 inches for the largest size, with 1-2 inches of positive ease built into the design. This garment is engineered for practical, everyday wear with easy-care properties ideal for active children.

Techniques Used

This pullover is constructed using bottom-up knitting methodology, meaning the body is worked from the cast-on edge upward before dividing for armholes. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, creating seamless construction for improved comfort and durability. The design features colorwork stripes in a zigzag pattern that are integrated into the stockinette body and sleeves, adding visual interest while maintaining structural integrity. The combination of these techniques creates a garment that is both visually appealing and technically sound for an advanced beginner skill level.

Stitches Used

The Cayenne pullover employs fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for children's knitwear. The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves is stockinette stitch worked in the round, which creates a smooth, uniform fabric surface. The ribbed edging uses K1/P1 ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches), which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape through wear and washing. Standard decreases including knit 2 together (K2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) are used for shaping at the armholes and throughout the garment construction.

Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions

The Cayenne is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK, a practical choice for children's garments. This yarn is composed of 100% Extra Fine Superwash Merino fiber, offering both softness and easy-care properties essential for frequently-washed children's clothing. Each skein yields 137 yards and weighs 50 grams. The main color (MC) requirements range from 2 skeins for the smallest size to 8 skeins for the largest size, while the contrast color (CC) requires 1-2 skeins depending on size.

Needle requirements include US 6 (4mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 24-inch lengths, along with US 6 (4mm) double-pointed needles for working the round and shaping. A US 5 (3.75mm) 16-inch circular needle is used for ribbed edging to achieve proper gauge and elasticity. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch worked in the round, blocked, using the larger needle. Additional materials include locking stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches during construction, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming.

Design Details and Construction

The pullover features a straightforward construction process suitable for advanced beginners. The body is worked in stockinette stitch with integrated zigzag colorwork stripes that follow charted patterns. Depending on the size range, crafters work either Chart 2 (for sizes 6-12 months through 2-4 years) or Chart 1 (for sizes 4-6 years through 10-12 years), indicating that the colorwork complexity scales with garment size. After completing the colorwork section, the main color is continued until the piece reaches the specified length from the cast-on edge, which ranges from 8 inches for the smallest size to 15 inches for the largest size. The garment is then divided for armholes, with specific stitch counts provided for each size to ensure proper fit and proportions throughout the size range.
