Valley Yarns Parapet Men's Pullover Sweater
What is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Parapet is an adult men's basic pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman. This beginner-friendly project features a classic crew neck construction and is available in eight sizes, ranging from 36¾ inches to 63¼ inches in finished chest measurement. The sweater combines timeless styling with modern comfort, making it an ideal first sweater project for knitters new to garment construction.
Techniques Used
The Parapet employs bottom-up construction, meaning the sweater is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the shoulders. The garment is worked flat on circular needles using back-and-forth rows rather than in the round, and all pieces are seamed together after completion. This pieced construction method—knitting the back, front, and sleeves as separate components before joining them—is a fundamental technique that helps knitters develop essential garment assembly skills. The pattern also incorporates short-row shaping using the wrap-and-turn method, a technique that adds subtle shaping to the garment while maintaining the overall simplicity appropriate for beginner crafters.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the Parapet is the box-rib stitch, which creates an allover textured pattern across the sweater body. This stitch combines knit and purl stitches in a structured arrangement that produces a visually interesting surface with excellent elasticity and drape. The ribbed hem uses a 2x2 rib (alternating 2 knit stitches with 2 purl stitches), a classic finishing technique that provides stretch and helps the hem sit neatly against the body. The pattern also employs standard decreases including knit 2 together (K2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) for shaping, along with purl 2 together (P2tog) for decreases on wrong-side rows.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Parapet is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky, a luxurious blend of 85% wool and 15% alpaca. This fiber combination creates a soft, lofty yarn that is exceptionally warm while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable wear. The yarn comes in 100-gram skeins with approximately 108 yards per skein. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (36¾") requires 9 skeins, while the largest size (63¼") requires 16 skeins. The sample sweater shown in the pattern was knitted in Med Grey Heather, a versatile neutral colorway that complements various skin tones and styling preferences.
Needles and Gauge
The Parapet requires US 10 (6mm) circular needles in 24-30 inch length for the main body knitting, with US 9 (5.5mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 24-30 inch lengths for the ribbed hem. The use of slightly smaller needles for the ribbing creates a tighter, more elastic edge that contrasts nicely with the larger-needle box-rib texture. The working gauge is 12 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in box stitch when blocked and measured on the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the sweater fits as designed.
Additional Materials and Construction Details
Beyond yarn and needles, the Parapet requires stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction points, stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during assembly, and a tapestry needle for seaming the finished pieces together and weaving in yarn ends. The pattern uses the long-tail cast-on method to establish the initial stitches, a versatile technique that creates a professional-looking, elastic edge suitable for garment construction. The pattern documentation includes a reference to a video tutorial for the long-tail cast-on, providing visual support for knitters learning this foundational technique.
Why This Pattern Excels for Beginners
The Parapet is specifically designed as a beginner project that teaches fundamental sweater-knitting skills without overwhelming new crafters. The bulky yarn weight and large needle size mean the sweater knits up quickly, providing gratifying progress and completion within a reasonable timeframe. The straightforward box-rib stitch is easy to work and forgiving of minor
