Valley Yarns Ibis Pullover Sweater
What is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Ibis is a figure-skimming pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman. This intermediate-level knitting project features a modern V-neck and cap-sleeves, making it versatile enough for both office wear and dressier occasions. The sweater is available in sizes XS through 4XL, with finished bust measurements ranging from 32¼ inches to 60¼ inches, accommodating 1 to 2 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.
Techniques Used
The Ibis sweater employs multiple advanced knitting techniques to create its distinctive design. The garment is worked seamlessly in the round using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The construction combines bottom-up building with worked-in-the-round methods for the body and sleeves. A prominent lace technique is incorporated throughout the design, featuring decorative lace borders that add both drape and visual interest. The lace elements are strategically placed to enhance the sweater's modern aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental and decorative stitches to achieve its elegant appearance. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic knit surface. Lace stitch is worked in repeating 14-stitch motifs that create the sweater's signature textural detail. The pattern incorporates standard decreases including knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) for shaping, as well as slip 2 together as if to knit, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over (s2kp2) for double decreases. These stitch techniques work together to create the V-neck shaping and cap-sleeve construction while maintaining the integrity of the lace pattern sections.
Materials
The Ibis sweater is knitted with Valley Yarns Granville, a premium blend of 90% Pima Cotton and 10% Merino Wool. This fiber composition offers a soft hand with a gentle sheen and crisp stitch definition, ideal for showcasing the lace detail and stockinette sections. The sample shown features Mineral Green colorway (Color 09). Yarn requirements range from 5 skeins for the smallest size (XS) to 11 skeins for the largest size (4XL), with each skein providing 50 grams and 167 yards of yardage.
The pattern requires US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32–40-inch lengths for the main fabric, worked at a gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. A US 4 (3.50mm) circular needle in 16–24-inch length is used for ribbing or edge finishing. Additional materials include a stitch holder or waste yarn for holding stitches, 2 stitch markers in a unique color for pattern tracking, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming any necessary sections.
