Valley Yarns Aloutte Knitting Pattern Set

What Is Being Made

The Alouette pattern set includes two coordinated baby garments: a long-sleeved wrap-front jacket and a matching beanie. Designed by Julie Turjoman, this collection is specifically created for newborns and infants, making it an ideal quick-knit project for baby shower gifts or treasured keepsakes. The set features charming contrast color rib trim and I-Cord ties that add both functional and decorative elements to the designs.

Garment Details and Sizing

Jacket: Available in five sizes ranging from 0-3 months through 18-24 months, with finished chest measurements from 16½ inches to 20 inches. The pattern is shown in the 6-12 month size.

Beanie: Offered in three sizes (0-3 months, 6-12 months, and 18-24 months) with circumference measurements of 12, 14, and 16 inches respectively. The sample shown is the 6-12 month size.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Worked Flat: The jacket is primarily constructed using flat knitting, which is beginner-friendly and allows for easier shaping and construction of the wrap-front design
  • Hem Single: A simple hemming technique is incorporated into the pattern for finished edges
  • I-Cord Ties: Decorative and functional cord elements are created using specialized knitting techniques to add visual interest and practical closures
  • Contrast Color Rib Trim: Ribbed edging in a contrasting color is worked to frame necklines, cuffs, and other edges, creating a polished, professional finish
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch pattern used throughout both garments, creating a smooth, classic fabric surface

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner to intermediate crafters. Key stitches include knit (K), purl (P), knit 2 together (K2tog) for decreasing, and ribbing for the contrast trim sections. The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which alternates knit and purl rows to create the characteristic smooth texture.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn: Valley Yarns Southwick, a baby-soft blend composed of 52% Pima Cotton and 48% Bamboo. This fiber combination is specifically chosen for its gentle, breathable qualities, making it ideal for delicate baby skin.

  • Yarn Weight and Yardage: Each skein contains 50 grams and yields 105 yards
  • Jacket Yarn Requirements: Main Color (Nantucket Blue): 3 to 6 skeins depending on size; Contrast Color (Onyx): 1 skein

Needles and Tools

Jacket Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 32-40 inch lengths, plus double-pointed needles for smaller sections. A smaller US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle in 16-inch length is used for the ribbed trim sections after blocking.

Beanie Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) 9-inch circular needles and double-pointed needles for the main fabric, with a smaller US size 5 (3.75 mm) 9-inch circular needle for the ribbed sections.

Additional Materials: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming.

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on the larger needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, particularly important for baby garments that must fit properly for safety and comfort.
