Product Description

Valley Yarns Nougat is a women’s oversized lace topper that will be enjoyed for three of the four seasons knit in Southwick. This fabulous pullover is perfect over a tank this spring, or a swimsuit this summer, or even over a long-sleeved tee in the fall. It features a wide v-neck with an allover lace leaf motif that is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. Valley Yarns Southwick combines the softness of Pima cotton with the beauty and drape of the bamboo fiber to create a silky soft yarn with a fluid drape. Valley Yarns Nougat Cape and Poncho

What is Being Made

The Nougat is an oversized, versatile lace topper designed by Julie Turjoman that functions as a three-season garment. This cape-style piece offers multiple styling options: it provides warmth on cool summer evenings, serves as an elegant bathing suit cover-up, and works as a beautiful outer layer during fall months. The garment features a wide V-neckline and is characterized by its falling leaves lace pattern, which creates an open, airy aesthetic. Available in five size ranges from XS-S through 5XL-4XL, the Nougat is designed for intermediate-level knitters seeking a sophisticated, wearable project.

Techniques Used

The Nougat employs several advanced construction techniques to achieve its polished, professional finish. The garment is worked flat on circular needles, then strategically seamed for structure and fit. The shoulders feature short-row shaping using the Japanese Short-Row technique, which creates invisible wraps that enhance both fit and drape without visible distortion. The sides are seamed from the base of the armholes to the hem for added structure. The hem edge is finished with K1/P1 ribbing to frame the overall lace pattern, while the armholes are edged with garter stitch that incorporates "k1fb" increases for a refined edge treatment.

Stitches Used

This intermediate project centers on lace stitch work, specifically featuring a falling leaves lace pattern that creates the garment's signature open, flowing aesthetic. The pattern employs fundamental lace-knitting stitches including:

  • Yarn overs (Yo) for creating the openwork characteristic of lace
  • Knit 2 together (K2tog) decreases to balance yarn overs
  • Slip, slip, knit (Ssk) decreases for directional shaping
  • Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over (Sk2p) for double decreases
  • Garter stitch for armhole edging
  • K1/P1 ribbing for hem finishing

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Nougat is worked in Valley Yarns Southwick, a luxurious blend of 52% Pima Cotton and 48% Bamboo that provides beautiful soft drape essential for this lace design. The yarn is fingering weight at 105 yards per 50-gram ball. Yardage requirements range from 840 yards (8 balls) for the smallest sizes to 1,470 yards (14 balls) for the largest sizes. The pattern shown is worked in colorway 04-Blue Lapis.

Needles required include US size 7 (4.50 mm) circular needles in both 16" and 24–32" lengths for the main lace pattern, and US size 6 (4.00 mm) circular needles in the same lengths for ribbed sections. The gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in the lace stitch pattern on larger needles when blocked. Additional materials include stitch markers (including locking stitch markers or knitters safety pins) and a tapestry needle for seaming and finishing.

Finished Measurements

The Nougat is designed with generous positive ease ranging from 8 to 12 inches. Bottom circumference measurements span from 44¾ inches (XS-S) to 70½ inches (5XL), while length from underarm to hem ranges from 18 inches in the smallest size to 22 inches in the largest size, allowing for versatile styling and comfortable wear across multiple body types.
