Valley Yarns Lemondrop is a women’s long sweater with a
unique twist knit in Northfield. The pullover has an open front joined
at the bust by a conventional Celtic knot cable, balanced by
complementary cables on the back and sleeves. Lemondrop is knit flat in one
piece from the bottom up, and the fronts are joined in the round at the bust to
work the cable. The sleeves are worked flat from the bottom up and then seamed.
Valley Yarns Northfield is a glorious blend of Merino, baby alpaca, and silk.
Northfield has a slight sheen from the silk, adding a touch of sophistication
to this delightful yarn. The cable patterns are charted and written out.

The Lemondrop is an intermediate-level cardigan designed by Susan Baron that takes a contemporary approach to the classic long sweater silhouette. This garment features an open front that is uniquely joined at the bust by a woven cable motif, creating a distinctive design element. The open front is balanced by complementary cables positioned on the back and sleeves, resulting in a cohesive and visually striking construction. Available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5X, with finished bust measurements from 34¼ inches to 66¼ inches (with 2 inches of positive ease), the Lemondrop offers an inclusive size range for various body types.
The Lemondrop employs a mixed construction approach that combines both flat and circular knitting techniques. The garment is worked using circular needles, allowing for efficient stitch management and the creation of seamless sections where appropriate. The flat-working method is utilized for certain components, providing flexibility in shaping and construction. This hybrid approach enables the knitter to work both in the round and flat as the pattern design requires, making it an excellent project for intermediate knitters looking to expand their technical repertoire.
The primary stitch used throughout the Lemondrop is stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric base that showcases the yarn's drape and stitch definition. The signature design element features woven cables that serve as both functional and decorative components. The cable panel is a multiple of 25 stitches worked over 19 rounds, measuring 2½ inches wide after blocking. The cable pattern incorporates right-leaning and left-leaning plaited cable crosses, specifically 3/1/3 RPC (right plaited cable cross) and 3/1/3 LPC (left plaited cable cross) stitches. These plaited cables create an intricate, woven appearance that distinguishes the front opening join and complements the back and sleeve details. The cable work requires the use of cable needles to manipulate stitches and create the crossing effects that define the pattern.
The Lemondrop is designed to be worked with Valley Yarns Northfield, a premium blend composed of 70% Merino Wool, 20% Baby Alpaca, and 10% Silk. This fiber composition provides exceptional softness and luxurious drape while maintaining crisp stitch definition—qualities essential for displaying the cable work and stockinette stitch clearly. Each ball contains 50 grams and yields 124 yards. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 10 balls for the smallest size (XS) to 22 balls for the largest size (5X).
The pattern calls for US 6 (4mm) circular needles in either 32-inch or 40-inch lengths, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. A US 5 (3.5mm) needle in any type and length is also required, likely for ribbed edgings or cuff work. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, two cable needles for executing the plaited cable crosses, stitch holders or waste yarn for managing live stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming if necessary.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rounds equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. The 25-stitch cable panel measures 2½ inches wide after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, which range from 34¼ inches in the bust for size XS to 66¼ inches for size 5X, all worked with 2 inches of positive ease for comfortable wearing.
