#205 Houndstooth Placemats

Skill Level: Early Beginner

What is Being Made: A set of four placemats featuring a classic houndstooth pattern in blue and white colorways, designed for a Vermont lakeside cottage aesthetic. Each finished placemat measures 12.25" x 14.25" (with 0.75" fringe on either end).

Techniques Used: Houndstooth color-and-weave pattern combined with plain weave. The designer, Marthe Young, chose this pattern because it appears complex but is actually straightforward to execute on a rigid heddle loom, making it beginner-friendly.

Stitches and Weave Structure: Plain weave houndstooth using a 10-dent rigid heddle reed at 10 ends per inch (epi) and 8 picks per inch (ppi).

Materials:

  • Warp Yarn: Valley Yarns Goshen (48% Peruvian Cotton/46% Modal/6% Silk, 92 yards per ball) in #27 Bermuda Blue (228 yards) and #2 Natural (167 yards)
  • Weft Yarn: Valley Yarns Goshen in #27 Bermuda Blue (180 yards) and #2 Natural (102 yards)
  • Total Yarn Required: 5 skeins #27 Bermuda Blue and 3 skeins #2 Natural
  • Equipment: Rigid heddle loom 15" or larger with 10-dent reed, 2 stick shuttles 16" or longer, and optionally one Beefy Pick-Up Stick 20" or longer or an additional stick shuttle
  • Warp Setup: 100" warp length with 140 ends at 14" width in reed

#99 Golden Plum Tartan Scarf

#197 Polka Dot Towel

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

What is Being Made: A decorative towel featuring a polka dot pattern created through advanced beginner techniques.
