Project Overview
This designer collection features a coordinated scarf and hat set created using crochet techniques. Both pieces showcase a distinctive rib-textured fabric worked in a bias construction, making them versatile unisex accessories suitable for gifting. The designs offer adjustability in sizing and yardage requirements, allowing crafters to customize the finished measurements to their preferences.
What Is Being Made
- Scarf: A rectangular accessory measuring 7 inches wide by 60 inches long (adjustable for both width and length based on available yarn)
- Hat: A fitted head covering available in three sizes—Kid (18" head circumference), Woman (20" head circumference), and Man (22" head circumference)—with adjustable depth ranging from 7 to 8.5 inches. The hat design provides full coverage of the forehead and ears, with the option to fold back the edge for a cap-like appearance
Techniques Used
Both garments employ seamless construction and are worked flat in a bias configuration. The bias technique creates a naturally shaped fabric with strategic increases and decreases that produce the desired drape and fit. The scarf features extra height at row ends to enhance its rectangular form, while the hat's bias construction contributes to its three-dimensional shaping.
Stitches and Construction Details
The entire project utilizes single crochet as the primary stitch. The distinguishing feature is the unconventional stitch placement: rather than working into the top loops as is typical in crochet, stitches are worked into the bar located just below the top loops. This specialized technique creates a pronounced rib-like texture that gives both pieces their characteristic appearance and tactile quality.
The pattern requires familiarity with basic crochet abbreviations including chain (ch), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), turning chain (tch), and yarn over (YO). Crafters should be comfortable reading crochet stitches, locating loops accurately, and maintaining an even, relaxed gauge throughout the project.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Valley Yarns Superwash, composed of 100% extra fine merino wool in a medium worsted weight. The yarn is offered in color 321 Mulberry for this pattern. Yardage requirements are as follows:
- Hat: Approximately 2 balls (140 yards for the 20" woman's size sample)
- Scarf: Approximately 4 balls (365 yards for the sample shown)
Tools: A US Size J-10 (6.00mm) crochet hook or the size needed to achieve proper gauge, along with a fine tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is essential for this project's success. The pattern specifies the following measurements:
- Straight gauge: 13 single crochet stitches equal 4 inches in width; 12 rows equal 4 inches in length
- Bias gauge: 5 single crochet stitches equal 1 inch in scarf width or hat depth; 10 rows equal 4 inches in scarf length or hat circumference
Both the scarf width and length, as well as the hat circumference and depth, are adjustable. Crafters can modify dimensions by working additional or fewer stitches and rows as desired, provided they maintain consistent gauge.
Yarn Characteristics
Valley Yarns Superwash is described as a wonderfully soft, versatile, medium worsted-weight wool that is particularly well-suited for crocheted accessories. The superwash treatment allows for easy care, making these pieces practical for regular wear. The yarn's full-bodied nature contributes to the substantial feel of the finished fabric, while the rib texture created by the specialized single crochet technique adds visual interest and dimensional appeal.
Skill Level
This pattern is designated as beginner level, though success requires specific competencies. Crafters should be confident in reading and interpreting crochet stitches, accurately locating loops within the fabric, and maintaining an even, relaxed tension throughout. Those with these foundational skills will find the straightforward single crochet construction accessible, despite the unconventional stitch placement that creates the distinctive rib texture.
