Product Description
The Valley Yarns Emerging Designer Sproutlet Hat is the perfect gift for that new little one knit in Valley Superwash. It begins with a cabled band that is knit flat and then joined by grafting. From there stitches are picked up and knit up, decreasing to a cute little top knot. You’ll want to make this for every special little one in your life! Our Valley Yarns Valley Superwash is machine-washable in cold water, and this worsted weight yarn is incredibly soft. The cable pattern is in written form only.

What Is Being Made
The Sproutlet Hat is a charming knitted hat designed for infants and toddlers, created as part of the WEBS Emerging Designer Series. This design by Debbi Stone produces a finished hat with head circumferences of 12 inches or 14 inches, making it an ideal gift for newborns and small children. The hat features a distinctive cabled band at the base combined with a fitted crown that tapers to a decorative top.
Techniques Used
This project employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that make it suitable for advanced beginners and beyond. The hat is worked flat for the cabled band section, which is then seamed or grafted together to create a seamless join. Once the band is complete, stitches are picked up and the hat transitions to working in the round for the crown shaping. This combination of flat and circular knitting creates both visual interest and structural integrity in the finished garment.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Sproutlet Hat showcases cable work as a primary design element. The Sproutlet Cable Band Pattern features two main cable stitches: 2/2 RC (right cable), which involves slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle, holding to back, knitting 2, then knitting 2 from the cable needle; and 2/2 LC (left cable), which mirrors this technique by holding the cable needle to the front. The band pattern is worked over 4 rows and repeats 23 to 27 times depending on the size chosen.
The crown of the hat is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic knit fabric. Crown shaping is achieved through strategic decreases using k2tog (knit 2 together) decreases placed at regular intervals across multiple rounds. These decreases gradually reduce the stitch count from 48 or 54 stitches down to 6 stitches at the crown top, creating the characteristic tapered shape.
Materials
This project requires one skein of Valley Yarns Valley Superwash, a yarn composed of 100% Extra Fine Merino wool. The yardage provided is 97 yards per 50-gram skein, with the sample shown in color 694 Spring Leaf. The yarn weight and fiber content make this an ideal choice for baby garments, offering softness and easy care through machine washing.
Needles required are US size 7 (4.50 mm), with options for either double-pointed needles or a 40-inch circular needle using the magic loop method for working in the round. Knitters should also have a cable needle on hand for executing the cable stitches in the band pattern, and waste yarn for the provisional cast-on technique used to begin the hat band.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 4.5 stitches and 8 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Two finished sizes are provided: a 12-inch head circumference and a 14-inch head circumference, allowing customization for different ages and head sizes. The hat band measures approximately 23 to 27 repeats of the cable pattern depending on size, and the crown section rises 4.5 inches from the lower edge of the band before decreasing begins.
