The Sproutlet Sweater is a classic children's cardigan designed by Debbi Stone as part of the WEBS Emerging Designer Series. This wee sweater features a charming cable detail running down either side of the buttoned front, combining timeless style with modern construction techniques. Available in four finished sizes ranging from 16 to 22 inches, this piece is designed to grow with your little one while maintaining elegant proportions and refined detailing.
This sweater is knit from the top down using a seamless construction method, which allows for easy fitting adjustments and minimal finishing work. The yoke is worked in the round, establishing the foundation for the garment before dividing for the sleeves and lower body. The top-down approach means you can try on the sweater as you work and adjust length to your preference before binding off.
The Sproutlet Sweater combines two primary stitch patterns for visual interest and texture:
The yoke shaping uses strategic increases worked with make-one stitches (m1R and m1L) placed on either side of marked sections. This creates a fitted yoke that gradually expands to accommodate the body and sleeves. The cable pattern is integrated into the yoke shaping, with cables worked on the front sections while increases occur at marked intervals, demonstrating advanced-beginner level construction skills.
The sleeves are worked in the round from the yoke down to the cuff. After the initial yoke shaping, sleeves are set aside and worked separately with decreases at the underarm to create a tapered fit. Each sleeve is finished with k2, p2 ribbing worked over 8 rounds using double-pointed needles or the magic loop method, depending on your preference. Sleeve lengths vary by size from 4 to 6.5 inches.
The right front button band is picked up and knit from the finished edge, working stitches in the second stitch from the selvedge for a neat appearance. The band is worked in p2, k2 ribbing and accommodates six ½-inch buttons spaced evenly along the front opening. This construction method creates a professional finish with minimal seaming required.
The Sproutlet Sweater is designed to be knit with Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK, a 100% Extrafine Merino yarn that offers excellent softness and durability for children's garments. The superwash treatment makes the finished sweater easy to care for—an important consideration for active children. Yardage requirements range from 274 yards for the smallest size to 411 yards for the largest size, requiring 2 to 3 skeins depending on finished size. The pattern specifies the Spring Leaf colorway in the sample.
This pattern requires two needle sizes: US size 4 (3.50mm) needles for ribbed sections and US size 6 (4.00mm) needles for the main stockinette and cable sections. The needle size difference creates a subtle fabric density change that helps ribbed edges maintain their elasticity. Additional notions include a cable needle for working the cable stitches, six locking stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and six ½-inch buttons for the front closure.
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 5.5 stitches and 8 rows per inch in stockinette stitch using the larger needle size. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this top-down construction, as it ensures the sweater will fit correctly at all measurement points. The pattern provides four finished sizes with corresponding stitch
