Willow & Lark Eddie Jumper: Advanced Cable Knit Sweater for Children
What Is Being Made
The Eddie Jumper is a children's cable knit sweater designed by Willow & Lark, available in four size options to fit ages 2–3, 4–5, 6–7, and 8–9 years. The finished garment features a classic pullover construction with long sleeves and a crew neckline. Finished chest measurements range from 63cm (24¾ inches) to 77cm (30¼ inches), with corresponding lengths from 40cm to 53cm measured to the shoulder. Sleeve seams vary from 23cm to 35cm depending on size.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The Eddie Jumper employs several advanced knitting techniques that make it suitable for experienced crafters. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, meaning pieces are knitted separately and then joined together through seaming. This flat construction method allows for precise shaping and easier cable placement across the body.
Cable work is the primary decorative technique featured throughout this design. The pattern includes a body cable pattern that measures 30 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over the 4.00mm needles. Additionally, sleeve cable panels are incorporated, with each panel measuring 24 stitches and spanning 9cm (3½ inches) in width. Cable techniques require the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over other stitches, creating the distinctive twisted rope-like texture.
Stripes are worked into the design using a multi-color yarn palette. The pattern utilizes five different yarn colors in the striped colorway: Willow & Lark Poetry Ice Blue (A), Clotted Cream (B), Rose (C), Rhubarb Pink (D), and Garnet (E). Alternatively, a solid colorway option in Lake Blue is available for crafters who prefer a simpler color approach.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Eddie Jumper incorporates reverse stocking stitch as a foundational stitch, which creates a smooth, flat texture and serves as the background for cable panels. Reverse stocking stitch is measured at a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) using 4.00mm (US 6) needles.
Cable stitches form the decorative elements, with the pattern using abbreviations such as C4B (cable 4 back), which involves slipping the next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and leaving them at the back of work, then knitting the next 2 stitches before working the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates the characteristic crossing pattern of cable knit textures.
Standard knitting abbreviations are used throughout, including increases (inc), decreases (dec), knit (k), and cast off (bind off in US terminology). The pattern uses square bracket notation [ ] to indicate stitch repeats, allowing crafters to work pattern sections multiple times as directed.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Eddie Jumper pattern calls for Willow & Lark Poetry yarn in 50g (1¾oz) balls. For the striped colorway, crafters need 2 balls each of Ice Blue (A), Clotted Cream (B), Rose (C), and Rhubarb Pink (D), plus 1–2 balls of Garnet (E) depending on size. For the solid colorway option, 6–7 balls of Lake Blue are required based on the chosen size.
Two pairs of knitting needles are specified: one pair of 3.25mm (US 3) needles and one pair of 4.00mm (US 6) needles. The smaller needles are typically used for ribbed cuffs and neckbands to create elasticity, while the larger needles accommodate the main body and cable patterns. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches that define this design.
Difficulty Level and Craftsmanship
Rated as an advanced project, the Eddie Jumper is intended for experienced knitters. The combination of cable work, color changes, seaming multiple pieces together, and managing stitch counts across different sizes requires solid foundational knitting skills, familiarity with reading complex pattern instructions, and the ability to troubleshoot tension and shaping issues. The pattern provides detailed abbreviations and uses standard knitting notation, including size-specific instructions given in
