Wisteria Vest in Rowan Cotton Cashmere

What is Being Made

The Wisteria Vest is a sleeveless knitted garment designed to fit chest measurements ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) up to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches), making it suitable for a wide range of sizes. This vest features a classic construction with front and back panels, armhole shaping, and a finished neckband. The garment is crafted from Rowan Cotton Cashmere yarn, offering a blend of natural fibers for comfort and drape.

Techniques Used

This advanced beginner-level project employs several fundamental knitting techniques. The vest begins with a ribbed cuff at the lower edge, which provides elasticity and a neat finish. Increases are strategically placed using the make-one (M1) method to shape the garment from the ribbed section into the main body. Armhole shaping is achieved through a combination of cast-offs at the beginning of rows and decreases worked at each end of rows over multiple rows and alternate rows, creating a fitted sleeve opening. The neckline is finished with a circular needle technique for the neckband, which allows for seamless joining of stitches around the neck opening.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing (K1, P1): Used for the lower edge cuff, creating a stretchy, textured border that measures approximately 10 cm in length
  • Stockinette Stitch (st st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the vest, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic fabric
  • Make-One Increase (M1): Used strategically during the transition from ribbing to stockinette stitch to increase stitch count and shape the garment
  • Decrease Stitches: Worked at armhole edges to create fitted shaping

Materials and Tools

This project is worked in Rowan Cotton Cashmere yarn, a 50-gram ball weight, photographed in the colorway Morning Sky 221. The pattern specifies 4mm (US 6) needles for the main construction, including one pair of straight needles and one 4mm circular needle no longer than 40 cm in length for the neckband and armhole finishing. Additional supplies include stitch holders for securing stitches temporarily during construction and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.

Gauge and Sizing Information

The pattern is worked to a tension of 20 stitches and 28 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using 4mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The vest is available in nine sizes with actual chest measurements of the finished garment ranging from 100 cm (39¼ inches) to 180 cm (70¾ inches), accommodating a comprehensive size range from children to adults.
