Lang Dickey Knitting Pattern Overview

The Lang Dickey is a knitted accessory designed as a standalone collar piece, perfect for layering over sweaters or dresses. This downloadable PDF pattern from Lang Yarns offers a sophisticated neckwear solution with a front zipper opening and tailored fit across multiple sizes.

What Is Being Made

The Lang Dickey is a fitted collar accessory featuring a front center opening secured with a zipper. The design includes a shaped neckline, structured shoulders, and a ribbed collar band that frames the neck. Available in four sizes (S/M/L/XL), the finished garment measures 19 inches (48 cm) in length with bust measurements ranging from 30 to 39¼ inches (76 to 100 cm). This piece is worked as two separate front panels and one back panel, then seamed together and finished with a knitted zipper facing and ribbed collar pickup.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning pieces are knit from the cast-on edge upward to the shoulder shaping. The dickey is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, creating individual panels that are later seamed together. The front panels feature a center front opening that is bound off at a specific measurement (11 inches / 28 cm), allowing each side to be finished separately. Neck shaping is accomplished through strategic bind-offs at the neck edge on alternating rows, creating a gradual slope. Shoulder shaping mirrors the back piece construction for a professional fit. The finishing process includes picking up stitches around the neck opening to create an integrated collar band.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the main body is Stockinette stitch, worked as knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows. This creates a smooth, classic fabric suitable for a refined accessory.

The collar band features Half Brioche Rib, a textured stitch pattern that adds visual interest and elasticity. This stitch is worked over an odd number of stitches and follows a four-row repeat:

  • Row 1 (RS): Slip 1 edge stitch, alternating knit 1 and purl 1 across, ending with knit stitches
  • Rows 2 and 4 (WS): Slip 1 edge stitch, alternating purl 1 and knit 1 across, ending with purl and knit stitches
  • Row 3: Slip 1 edge stitch, alternating knit 1 below and purl 1 across, ending with knit below stitches

After working rows 1 through 4 once, rows 3 and 4 are repeated to establish the brioche texture. The zipper facing is worked in simple Stockinette stitch using 3 cast-on stitches.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Lang Dickey is designed to be knitted with Lang Yarns Frida, an extra-fine merino wool yarn that is superwash treated and mulesing-free, making it both durable and ethically produced. Yardage requirements vary by size: sizes S/M and M require 400 grams (4 balls) of yarn, while sizes L and XL require 500 grams (5 balls). The pattern specifies color pink-violet, item number 1078.0003.

Two sizes of ADDI knitting needles are required: US 4 (3.5mm) needles for the ribbed collar band and zipper facing, and US 6 (4mm) needles for the main Stockinette stitch body. The smaller needle size creates a tighter gauge suitable for the collar, while the larger needles produce the body fabric. Additionally, one 12-inch (30 cm) long zipper fastener is needed to complete the front opening.

Construction Summary

The pattern provides detailed shaping instructions for all four sizes, with specific stitch counts and measurements given in both inches and centimeters. The back and front pieces are shaped identically at the shoulders, while the front includes additional neck shaping and the center front opening. Once all pieces are complete, shoulder seams are sewn together, stitches are picked up around the neck opening to accommodate 119 to 131 stitches depending on size, and the Half Brioche Rib collar is worked to finish the neckline professionally.
