I was excited this yarn was part of the April Anniversary Sale. I love working with single ply yarn, and I've been trying to find a new love ever since Cascade yarns discontinued their soft spun and pastanza lines. Alafosslopi almost fits the bill. The colors are absolutely beautiful and it knits up quickly and smoothly. It is a little corse, but softens up when knit, and I'm sure will become even softer over time. And although corse, it is not unpleasant to work with. I did need to pull some straw from the fibers every once and awhile, but that didn't bother me. Overall, the pros outweigh the cons, and I would definitely buy this yarn again.

I used approximately 14 balls to knit a 4.5'x6' color work afghan.

Very pretty color, feels very rough

I bought this online based on the color and weight, but when it arrived, the color was gorgeous, but the feeling was very rough. I sent it back.

Comments about true Álafosslopi (Lopi):

My daughter is spending a season at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. She wanted a real Icelandic sweater, period, and that is what she got! My first one. I also made a hat and two pairs of mittens to go with. She worn everything in her first 24 hours there, and hasn't taken them off, as far as I know. Then I made on for my nephew on his way to Moscow in January...

Comments about true Álafosslopi (Lopi):

I made a pair of slippers which I felted. The yarn is so compact now it would serve as a pair of shoes!! I wouldn't make a garment with it which was close to bare skin as it's pretty scratchy but can see how water or moisture would not penetrate it. Perhaps a jacket would be OK. I'm sure it would be very warm.

    Comments about true Álafosslopi (Lopi):

I just relearned how to knit mittens with 4 needles to replace a pair that I made 20 years ago with similar yarn. These were the warmest mittens I've ever had and I was very bummed when they finally wore out last winter. I now have a new pair and made a pair for my son also. I love this yarn for its ease of use and its warmth.

    Comments about true Álafosslopi (Lopi):

Crocheting multi-colored scarf. Works up very quickly in open stitches (e.g., wave pattern) using aluminum hook. This is the classic Icelandic wool: starts off prickly but with each hand washing, gets softer. Keeps you very warm in winter. My order supplemented a gift of 3 skeins given to me from a relative who'd just come back from Iceland: website photos were true to color and so my order successfully complemented the gift.

First I knitted a beanie with it. Warm, windproof but itchy. I soaked it in fabric softener and that helped. Next I knitted an Icelandic sweater using 3 colors. It's my first sweater and so nice. Covered mistakes well, great to wear over a turtleneck, not too hot, nice outdoor sweater too. Knitting the wool felt nice in my hands. I'm making another sweater. They're beautiful.

Perfect traditional yarn for Icelandic sweater. The colors are beautiful, the yarn is sturdy and does not pill. It's a little scratchy when it is new, but I'm assuming it will soften with washing and wearing to a classic that will live nearly forever. I am loving working with it and have plans to make a sweater with it for myself once I am finished with my son's "Christmas Sweater" sometime in April!
