Valley Yarns Wood Nymph Knit Dress

What Is Being Made

The Wood Nymph is a full-skirted children's dress designed by Julie Turjoman, featuring a playful chevron striped pattern in multiple colors. This knit dress is versatile enough to be worn as a tunic over leggings as the child grows, making it a practical garment for active play. Available in six sizes ranging from 12 months to 12 years old, with finished chest measurements from 20 inches to 30 inches, the dress is designed to fit with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease for comfortable movement and growth room.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knit project employs several key techniques that create both visual interest and structural shaping:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The dress is worked from the bottom up in the round, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust length if needed.
  • Worked in the Round: The chevron striped body is knit as one continuous piece in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming the main body and creating a seamless fit.
  • Chevron Striping: The distinctive chevron pattern is created through strategic color changes and stitch manipulation, producing the characteristic zigzag visual effect that gives the dress its dynamic appearance.
  • Decrease Shaping: Decreases are strategically placed throughout the body to create the dress's signature fit-and-flare silhouette, providing shaping at the waist while allowing fullness in the skirt for twirling and movement.
  • Separate Sleeve Construction: Short sleeves are knit separately using double-pointed needles and then joined to the yoke, allowing for precise fit and the option to adjust sleeve length independently.

Stitches Used

The Wood Nymph pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined to create texture and pattern:

  • Chevron Stitch: The primary stitch pattern for the striped body, which creates the distinctive zigzag visual effect. Gauge for this stitch is 24 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches when blocked with larger needles.
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used for sections of the garment, with a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches when blocked with larger needles.
  • Ribbed Edgings: Applied to sleeve and neck edges to provide structure and a finished appearance, knit with smaller needles to create a snug, elastic edge.

Materials and Yarn

The Wood Nymph is designed to be knit with Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK, a practical choice for children's garments. This yarn is 100% Extra Fine Merino wool and comes in 50-gram skeins with 137 yards per skein. The superwash treatment makes the finished dress easy to care for, an essential feature for active children's clothing.

Color Requirements: The pattern calls for four coordinating colors of Valley Superwash DK:

  • Main Color (MC) in Fawn: 2 to 4 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1) in Burgundy: 2 to 3 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2) in Passion Plum: 1 to 2 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 3 (CC3) in Forest: 1 to 2 skeins depending on size

Needles and Tools: The pattern requires US size 5 (3.75 mm) and US size 4 (3.50 mm) needles in multiple lengths. Specifically, knitters will need 16-inch, 24-inch, and 32-inch circular needles in both sizes, plus double-pointed needles for sleeve construction. Additional materials include stitch holders, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming.

Pattern Details and Construction Notes

The Wood Nymph is an intermediate level pattern, suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to manage color changes and simultaneous shaping. The pattern emphasizes reading through all instructions before beginning, as there are size-specific instructions and shaping details that occur at the same time, requiring attention to multiple pattern elements concurrently.
