Valley Yarns Hyannis Cardigan
What Is Being Made
The Hyannis Cardigan is a colorwork cardigan designed by Kirsten Hipsky. This garment features a sophisticated construction where three coordinating colors of yarn are held together throughout the project to create a subtly blended, multi-tonal fabric. The cardigan is available in six finished sizes ranging from 32 inches to 52 inches, making it suitable for a variety of body types. The finished garment includes button closures and is designed to be a comfortable, flattering everyday piece.
Techniques Used
This cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-flat approach. The lower body is worked flat on circular needles from the cast-on edge upward, while the sleeves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles before being joined to the body. The seamless construction minimizes finishing work and creates a polished final product. The pattern encourages customization, noting that knitters can experiment with different color combinations of their favorite Valley Yarns Huntington shades to personalize their finished cardigan.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Hyannis Cardigan employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for an intermediate skill level. The primary stitch used throughout most of the garment is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric. Ribbing is used strategically at the cuffs and waistband to provide structure and a refined finish. The ribbing pattern used is a multiple of 4 stitches, worked as follows:
- Row 1 (Wrong Side): Purl 1, knit 2, purl 1; repeat from asterisk
- Row 2 (Right Side): Knit 1, purl 2, knit 1; repeat from asterisk
This ribbing pattern is repeated throughout the ribbed sections. The garment is worked with all three yarn colors held together simultaneously, which requires careful tension management but creates a beautifully blended, heathered appearance.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Hyannis Cardigan is designed to be knit with Valley Yarns Huntington, a yarn composed of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon. This fiber blend provides softness, durability, and easy care. The pattern calls for 4 to 6 skeins depending on the finished size, with each skein weighing 50 grams and providing 218 yards of yardage. Three coordinating colors are used simultaneously: Color 29 North Sea, Color 30 Deep Pine, and Color 31 Dark Olive. The specific yardage requirements are 4 skeins each for sizes 32, 36, and 44 inches; 5 skeins each for sizes 40 and 44 inches; and 6 skeins each for sizes 48 and 52 inches.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires US size 10.5 (6.5mm) circular needles in both 40-inch and 16-inch lengths, as well as double-pointed needles of the same size for sleeve construction. A smaller needle size, US size 9 (5.5mm) in a 40-inch circular, is used for ribbed sections to create proper gauge and fabric density. Additional notions include 4 stitch markers for marking pattern sections and 6 one-inch buttons for the cardigan front closures. The working gauge is 14 stitches and 20 rows equal 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch when all three colors are held together using the larger needles.
Construction Details
The lower body begins with a cast-on of 104 to 176 stitches depending on size. Ribbing is worked for 2 inches at the cuff, followed by 8 inches of Stockinette Stitch. A waistband section of 4 inches of ribbing provides shaping, followed by an additional 4 inches of Stockinette Stitch to the underarm. Stitch markers are placed to divide the body into left front, back, and right front sections. The sleeves are worked in the round from a cast-on of 28 stitches, with increases occurring every 4th to 8th round depending on size, building to between 48 and 68 stitches. Sleeves are worked to 18 inches
