Valley Yarns Copper Penny Child's Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Copper Penny Pullover is a child's knit sweater designed to fit sizes 6, 8, and 10 with finished chest measurements of 26, 28, and 30 inches respectively. This pullover is described as a cute guernsey-style sweater in a bright copper penny color, suitable for either boys or girls. The garment features decorative stitch pattern panels worked into the body, creating visual interest and texture throughout the design.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its finished structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knit from the bottom edge upward, beginning with the ribbed hem and progressing toward the neckline
  • Worked flat: All pieces are knit flat on circular needles rather than in the round, allowing for seaming later
  • Seamed assembly: Individual pieces (back, front, and sleeves) are knit separately and then seamed together to create the finished garment
  • Cable techniques: Multiple cable stitch patterns are incorporated, including Left Slipped Cable and Right Slipped Cable panels that add dimensional texture
  • Stitch pattern integration: Decorative panels including the Diamond pattern, Jacob's Ladder, and slipped cables are worked into stockinette stitch backgrounds

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates a variety of stitches and stitch techniques to achieve its design:

  • Stockinette Stitch: Forms the primary fabric base, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows
  • Ribbing: A knit 4, purl 4 rib pattern creates the stretchy cuff at the hem, measuring 1.5 inches in length
  • Diamond Panel (13 stitches): A 22-row repeat pattern combining knit and purl stitches with a bobble stitch (MB) at its center, creating a raised diamond motif
  • Left Slipped Cable (LSC) (3 stitches): A 4-row repeat using slipped stitches worked with yarn in back (wyib) and yarn in front (wyif) to create a twisted cable effect
  • Right Slipped Cable (RSC) (3 stitches): The mirror image of the Left Slipped Cable, also worked over 4 rows with slipped stitches creating a directional cable pattern
  • Jacob's Ladder (4 stitches): A simple 6-row repeat pattern where four stitches are knitted across, creating a textured ladder-like appearance

Materials and Tools

The Copper Penny Pullover is constructed using quality materials specified for durability and comfort:

  • Yarn: Valley Yarns Superwash in color #861 Copper, a 100% Extrafine Merino fiber. Yardage required is 6 skeins for size 6, 7 skeins for size 8, and 8 skeins for size 10, with each skein providing 98 yards at 50 grams
  • Needles: US 8 (5.0mm) circular needles in 24-inch length, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge
  • Notions: 2 stitch holders for holding stitches during neck shaping and 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
  • Gauge: 19 stitches and 28 rows measured over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements

Pattern Structure and Construction Details

The sweater begins with a cast-on of 60, 64, or 68 stitches depending on size. The ribbed hem is worked for 1.5 inches, followed by an increase row that adds 2, 3, or 4 stitches evenly across to create 62, 67, or 72 stitches for the body. The body is then worked in Stockinette Stitch with integrated stitch pattern panels until the piece reaches 9.5 inches or the desired length to the underarm. Neck shaping is introduced by placing the center stitches on a holder and working each shoulder separately, allowing for

I wanted a little more challenge in my knitting and I really like this pattern for my 5 year old granddaughter. I am finding the pattern to be a bit of a challenge but have figured out a way to accommodate the three different patterns in the yoke. I have had to unravel it multiple times catching my mistakes. I am making it without doing the three stitch decrease because the instructions came after the instructions for doing the yoke and I am not tearing out 44 rows. Will see how the sleeves...
